My Spotify Wrapped this year was very similar to my Wrapped in 2023... And in 2022. 🎧 I had been listening to a lot of the same songs. 🎸 I don't know much about music. I don't know the latest bands. I don't go to gigs. And I rarely drive, so I rarely listen to the radio. My song 'discovery system' is pretty non-existent. (I think we underestimate how much headphones reduce spontaneous discovery of new music: we simply don't hear what other people are listening to.) 🗣️ This all got me thinking about networks. Here's a thought experiment: if there was a company that gave you a break down of your Conversations Wrapped - showing you the people you spent the most time talking to in 2024 - would it be substantially different from the year before? Or the year before that? 👥 It's easy to get whorled into a narrow network - both at work and in our social lives. We spend a lot of time with the same people, talking about the same things. ✨ And this takes away the opportunity for spontaneous discovery of new things - and with it the opportunity to spark the connections between ideas that lead to innovations. And an innovation doesn't just have to be a product or service. It can be a new perspective on the world, a new way to ask a question, a new way to see yourself. 🎅 And this is all top of mind because I am going to Oli Barrett Christmas drinks this evening. A man who deliberately mixes up his network constantly - and with great charm. (I think also about Ben Brabyn and Tom McCallum who are helping others do it with their Walkabouts.) 🥂 So let's raise a glass this week to the new people in our lives in 2024. And look forward to a different enough network in 2025. Happy Christmas!
Love this Max. You mention the word innovation. My distilled definition is "doing different things and doing things differently". If one is innately curious, we will always look to stretch beyond our comfort zones, which is where growth comes. Do different things, do things differently. Meet new people, join new networks, learn new skills. Do different things, do things differently. Stretch by doing things you aren't good at, meeting and spending time with people you don't agree with, that you don't have much (on the surface) in common with. Be conscious of where you are in old patterns, including (I do often stress this) spending time with people who look and sound like you, rather than those of different backgrounds Do different things, do things differently.
Thank you for this provocation Max. It's good to consider what one adds each year - to self and others. Have I got 20 years of experience or one year of experience 20 times? For all who want some fresh air and fresh perspectives in 2025, I'd love to extend an invitation to join our #Walkabouts - monthly, nationwide, free and welcoming to all.
Always good to mix the conversation Max… it’s just more difficult when networking is your worst nightmare. I guess that’s the power of improv!
I think it would be an eye opener for me Max. I do think this year I have been a mix of both. Pushing to meet new people but also holding back at times. And I gain the most energy and enjoy my life the most when it's full of new experiences and people. We can be one of each other's new people in 2025. 👊

1mo📻 Festive greetings Max Dickins (and wonderful to see you yesterday)! I'm here with a festive hack for you to begin broadening that 2025 playlist... The mighty Spotify has a "radio" function and what that means is that you can pick a favourite artist and find tracks that Spotify thinks you'll like, based on that artist. So right now I'm listening to Learning to Dance in the Rain (a beautiful piano piece by Becky Ainge), and only because of my love for pianist Alexis Ffrench (my most listened to musicians this year). I put "Alexis Ffrench radio" into the search bar. So this morning, I've discovered a track AND an artist. 🎹 I love these "radio hacks" and you may know that I have one for people too. By asking my favourite people to bring their favourite people (+1) to events (like last night), I get to meet amazing people. Here's to dancing into 2025 and beyond! 🎶
