Hildebran Community Park transformed a former residential property near Town Hall into an attractive neighborhood park. The park’s design includes two playgrounds, an accessible walking trail, picnic shelter with restrooms, bocce ball court, horseshoe pits, disc golf course, and historically significant train depot which was relocated to the site and completely restored. With the 4th of July coming up, McGill is reflecting on how grateful we are to be able to work on projects that encourage people to get outside, enjoy the beautiful weather, and spend time with friends and family. #ShapingCommunitiesTogether

Late last month, the Morristown Zoning Board unanimously approved a back-of-house expansion to the 87-year-old Mayo Performing Arts Center in the Town of Morristown. 🎭 The plan calls for a 31,000 SF five-story addition and a bi-level parking garage. While the historic façade along South Street will be unchanged, #MPAC will now extend from South Street to King Place. We also want to note that most of the back-of-house addition will be dedicated to their #artseducation program, currently located in the buildings being replaced by the expansion. So not only will this expansion add to #Morristown’s historic charm and contribute to its economic vitality, but will also inspire local artists of the future. 🎨👨🎨 Cultural institutions like #MayoPAC are a vital economic engine for downtowns across the State, and particularly in Morristown, not only driving foot traffic to surrounding businesses, but driving the community's economic health. 🛍 In their most recent annual report, the Center stated that the nonprofit arts center generated more than $15 million in revenue for local businesses in the 2022/23 season. 💰 That's no chump change. FRA TAKE 5: 5 Questions with Jessica Newman, Wauchula Community Redevelopment Agency Director Q: What is your best piece of business advice for a new FRA member? Jessica: My best piece of advice is to have patience with perseverance. Redevelopment can take time. There will be setbacks and unexpected obstacles; however, your work will make a lasting change and will be worth it all. Q: If you had a superpower, what would it be and why? Jessica: You mean I don’t already have superpowers? My superpower would be the ability to see into the future. This would help move projects forward faster by seeing potential obstacles that may come up and therefore being able to address them early on. Q: We are going out for dinner/entertainment in your CRA District. Where are we going and why? Jessica: We have such good dining options in Wauchula, all of which are independent and locally owned, except our fast food. American, Mexican, Greek, Italian, Peruvian, or Chinese: dinner can be whatever your tastebuds desire. Depending on your idea of fun, I would either take you to the Peace River to hunt fossils at Crews Park or to enjoy a play in our historic city auditorium. Q: What do you hope to be remembered for? Jessica: I hope to be remembered for my commitment to my community and passion for improvement, while always being mindful of what makes Wauchula special and being careful to preserve it. I would hope my passion and my pride were evident and contagious and spread to others to carry forward. Q: What is the most exciting part of being in redevelopment? Jessica: The most exciting part of redevelopment is being able to see the results. Whether it is new construction on a vacant lot, the renovation of a blighted building, creating homes for families, or creating amenities for the public to enjoy here in our own city – these are tangible, visible things that are transforming my city and bringing joy and pride to my community. https://lnkd.in/eYpBrFsE #RedevelopmentWorks #Redevelopment #FloridaRedevelopment #MyFRA #FLRedevelopment

High Streets Expert & Director, The People & Places Partnership: Bringing facts and faces to town centres. @man_about_towns
If you could design a town centre from scratch, what would you include? As a prospective Labour government threatens to bulldoze through the planning system to create 21st Century New Towns, it would be well-served to look closely at pioneering places from the past. And my question is deliberately focused on town centres, as the social and economic hub of new communities. Creating communities is not about just building swaithes of new houses. Indeed, Keir Starmer and his team would do well to take a half-hour train journey to Letchworth Garden City to see how Ebenezer Howard’s more than century old vision has stood the test of time. Letchworth’s town centre has 233 businesses including the Broadway Cinema and Theatre with a modest 7% vacancy rate. Our post-pandemic survey revealed that active travel across its plentiful green spaces is as popular as driving for regular trips to the centre. Pedestrian access, convenience, public, spaces and built heritage were amongst the most-liked qualities, when we surveyed the opinions of over 700 residents. And it’s not just what you see in terms of the physical planning of the town centre that is worth learning from. Letchworth Garden City was created in a way that its key public assets like the cinema and shopping arcade, remained in some form of public ownership. Since the late 1990’s that has been under the stewardship of the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation which at the time received assets valued at £995 million. Yes, we are working with a partnership of the Heritage Foundation, LOVE LETCHWORTH LIMITED, North Herts Council and Hertfordshire County Council to help enhance people’s experience of the town centre, though that’s the same for neighbouring Hitchin & Baldock. Maybe if we try to learn the lessons from the past and work with planners’ expertise to create new towns that fit into the surrounding countryside, those figurative bulldozers won’t be necessary. #newtowns #letchworth #towncentres #housing #homes #sustainability #planning

This is the story of every town… our identity is associated with the downtown - not subdivisions and new commercial district off the interstate. A thriving and beautiful downtown is a thriving city. This is why ideas from Strong Towns, Revitalize, or Die., and Main Street America are so important. It’s also why facade grants and rehabilitated downtown buildings are so critical to the life of a city.

Our cities are built of neighborhoods. And our neighborhoods were built with a hundred little things (benches, bike lanes, parks, sidewalks, light posts, flower gardens, cafes, street vendors, etc.). What would happen if we took our dreams to rebuild a better neighborhood and combined it with our ability to do little things? Maybe we could build a better block. Here are my thoughts on building a better block based on what started in Oak Cliff, Texas (near Dallas) and spread from Portland to Detroit and Melbourne to Tahran. https://lnkd.in/gi8HVnmd *What are your dreams for rebuilding a better block in your city?

Newton is a beautiful city just outside of downtown Boston. Dubbed "The Garden City," it has some of the best tree-lined streets in New England, top-notch schools, and a real sense of community. You'll find a mix of architectural styles here, from Queen Anne Victorians to sleek modern condos. It's a great place to live if you want to be close to the city, but don't want to live in the city center. The community is diverse, the village centers offer plenty of shopping and public transportation, and there is always something interesting and fun to do. In many areas of Newton, you are close to shops and restaurants, and if you need to take the train, there are several Green Line T stops in Newton and well-located village stops on the Commuter Rail. So, if you're looking for a vibrant city with attractive neighborhoods, excellent schools, and a sense of community, check out Newton. You won't be disappointed. #bostonrealestate #bostonhomes #bostonluxuryhomes #newtonhomes #brooklinerealestate #brooklinenewconstruction
