Timeline: A labour dispute at the world's largest #copper mine has escalated, threatening to disrupt global copper supplies. The BHP-operated Escondida mine in Chile became the focal point for protests after workers overwhelming rejected a new three year collective bargaining agreement, alleging that the company was unfairly distributing mine dividends and making "no legitimate progress towards worker goals." At the heart of the dispute is the union's demand for 1% of the mine's dividends to be distributed equally among workers, reflecting broader concerns over income inequality at the site. BHP's offer was of US$29,000, lower than the US$36,000 demanded. https://lnkd.in/eXknWyEa #supplychain #coppersupply

Two major umbrella labor unions in South Korea are planning large-scale rallies in Seoul and other major cities nationwide to commemorate Labor Day, according to police. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions is organizing rallies in 15 cities and regions, involving around 85,000 members. In Seoul, a rally will begin in the central district of Jongno with 25,000 members marching in two directions. Additionally, 7,000 members of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions are planning to gather in Seoul's Yeouido on the same day. The National Police Agency (NPA) has decided to deploy 162 police units with 10,000 officers to the scenes across the nation, including 101 units in Seoul. They are prepared to respond sternly to any illegal acts by the groups, such as occupying streets or interfering with government officials at the rally sites. NPA Commissioner General Yoon Hee-keun emphasized the importance of safeguarding registered, legal rallies while firmly addressing any illegal behaviors to promote a law-abiding rally culture in society. With the upcoming Labor Day rallies, the police are bracing for potential challenges while ensuring the safety and security of the events. The intention is to strike a balance between respecting the right to peaceful assembly and maintaining public order. The police are committed to upholding the law and maintaining order during the rallies to create a safe and peaceful environment for all participants and the general public. #AsiaRisk #Protest,Demonstration,Dissent #SouthKorea Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gW4Bfejj

Unions win #HS2 site access battle at Old Oak Common job HS2 joint venture Balfour Beatty plc, VINCI, SYSTRA has finally agreed to allow construction union officials access to its HS2 #OldOakCommon site. Unite wins two-year campaign to allow officials access to site cabins The agreement secures the right of Unite officials to visit the project’s inductions and rest facilities to talk to all the workers on the site during their breaks, in order to deal with any concerns or worries they may have. The access deal was signed after a two-year campaign by #Unite, which included regular demonstrations, leafletting workers and resolving their concerns. It leaves London tunnels consortium Skanska, Costain Group PLC, STRABAG as the last remaining main works contractors denying unions access to their sites with all other JVs – BBVS, #AlignJV Eiffage Kier Ferrovial BAM (EKFB) and Mace/Dragados SA – now holding agreements. Unite regional officer Declan Murphy said: “Agreeing trade union site access should be a matter of course for all construction contractors. “But the successful campaign to achieve the agreement with BBVS shows that Unite will overcome any obstacle put in its way to ensure workers are not denied union access. Unite will now be turning its complete attention to securing a site access agreement for SCS workers.” https://lnkd.in/eCp8rmGT
