In response to this article on elevator construction, regulation, labor, and immigration, I believe a viable solution lies in a business model that leverages the strengths of a 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) designated 501c3 organization in conjunction with a benefit elevator company. Our nonprofit Emi's Elevator, which is the majority owner of Nokes Mountain Elevator Company, aims to address these issues by creating Small, Women-owned, and Minority-owned (SWAM) businesses and job opportunities through targeted apprenticeship programs. Our mission focuses specifically on public, low-income, and subsidized housing sectors, where there is a significant need for the maintenance, servicing, modernization, and new installation of elevator infrastructure. By prioritizing the creation of skilled jobs and fostering entrepreneurship within these underserved housing communities, we can alleviate labor shortages and contribute to economic development. Our approach ensures that workers receive the necessary training and support, promoting a sustainable workforce equipped to meet the demands of the elevator industry. In addition to our focus on housing, we also address elevator infrastructure needs in public facilities, including military bases, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, and other essential public institutions. Ensuring reliable and efficient elevator systems in these facilities not only improves operational efficiency and safety but also supports the well-being of the communities they serve. Moreover, by focusing on the maintenance and modernization of elevator infrastructure in public and subsidized housing, we can contribute to lowering housing costs. Efficient and reliable elevator systems reduce the overall maintenance costs for housing authorities, which can translate into lower rents and fees for residents. Additionally, by creating job opportunities and fostering economic growth within these communities, we help residents achieve financial stability, further reducing the economic pressures associated with housing costs. Through this integrated business model, we not only enhance the quality and safety of elevator systems in both housing and public facilities but also drive social impact by empowering marginalized groups, fostering community resilience, and contributing to more affordable housing and better public services.

Interesting! The Great Saunter event, a 32-mile grand loop walk around the edges Manhattan. Increasingly, with the completion of pathways encircling the island, this kind of trek can become more broadly enabled. (In her piece, "Great Saunter Tips from Decades of Walking Around Manhattan" Sarah Milstein mentions that more segments of established pathways around the edges are falling into place.) Opinion: Don’t destroy historic Bay Area neighborhoods to solve housing crisis In recent years, historic preservation has come under intense fire from state Sen. Scott Wiener and his YIMBY allies for allegedly interfering with housing production. However, the regional housing crisis can be solved without destroying historic neighborhoods. After coming of age in the late 1960s, preservation focused on properties associated with the nation’s elite. However, this has changed as the scope of what society thinks deserves protection has broadened. For example, did you know that San Francisco’s Tenderloin is the city’s largest historic district? Without historic preservation, we would have no Palace of Fine Arts, no Alamo Square, no Tonga Room, no Alcatraz and no Paramount Theater. The list goes on and on. The annual Golden Hammers awards are open! Submit your project to be in the running at https://lnkd.in/e8bprQ7P These awards were started back in 2000 with a goal of honoring excellence in neighborhood revitalization projects throughout Greater Richmond. Historic Richmond and SFCD are partnering for a 7th year to host the awards program to recognize professionals and community members improving our neighborhoods through restoration, adaptive reuse, new construction, placemaking, and historic preservation. Categories include: 1. Best Restoration: Includes restoration by a homeowner, contractor, or developer. Includes historic tax credit projects. 2. Best Adaptive Reuse: Includes projects that were rehabilitated for a new use, multi-family residential and historic tax credit projects welcome. 3. Best New Construction: Includes neighborhood infill. 4. Best Residential: Single-family residential projects. and the one we're most passionate about... 5. Best Placemaking & Urban Design: Arts and culture projects, park and green-space projects, transportation and infrastructure projects, or other neighborhood enhancing features including large scale (i.e., parks, urban streetscapes, etc.) and small scale (i.e., community garden, grass roots programming, etc.).
