I recently chatted with a physical therapy practice owner in Palo Alto, and he shared something that stuck with me. Burnout among physical therapists is becoming a big issue. Even though he has tried everything, such as scheduling only one-on-one sessions, lowering KPI targets, and offering competitive compensation, he is still facing high turnover. It is hard to hear that physical therapy schools are now teaching students how to manage burnout. We chose this profession because we genuinely care about helping people. We didn't expect the reality of burnout caused by paperwork, heavy caseloads, and other demands. When burnout hits, the quality of care goes down, and we end up just trying to get through the day. This is not what we signed up for. We didn’t want to lose our passion for patient care, and that’s exactly why I started PhyxUp Health. We want to change that. Our mission is to create a new kind of rehab care that uses technology to make healthcare easier and more efficient for both patients and therapists. We aim to provide PTs with the support they need to deliver the best care without burning out. If you are a physical therapist who believes in the power of technology and wants to be part of this change, I would love to connect. Let us work together to build a new standard where PTs can love what they do. Drop me a message if this resonates with you. #physicaltherapist #digitalhealth #bayarea

I'll go first. ➡️ I am a Physical Therapist with a current role in Health Equity and Interprofessional Collaboration ➡️ I interact mostly with Nursing in my new role within the Quality and Health Equity department I gave a little more context, so you can too! I encourage all of you to comment and then come back and read the responses, so you can develop your interprofessional lens with the focus of improving health. The Roles and Responsibilities competency for interprofessional collaborative practice states: "Use the knowledge of one’s own role and team members’ expertise to address individual and population health outcomes." So happy to read an article by Michelle Bihary in the Winter edition of the OT Connections magazine 2024 about Best Practice Supervision - the key quote was "It's crucial to acknowledge that investing in best practice supervision isn't just an option; it's an imperative. We must commit to fostering supervisory relationships that empower, nurture, and respect". Also equally happy to read an article by Roseanne Holliday in the same edition, Continuing the Neurodiversity Affirming Practice Conversation, which follows on from my article introducing this topic in the Summer 2023 OT Connections magazine! The key quote was "By listening to neurodivergent adults regarding their lived experiences and their interactions with health, education and community services we may gain a better understanding and insight into how to better serve our clients". Highly recommend reading these articles! #OccupationalTherapy #Connections #KnowledgeIsPower #NeurodiversityAffirmingPractice #OccupationalTherapySupervision

We love LifeStance Health 💙 🧠 As a #BehavioralHealth optimization partner I work with Behavioral Health facilities all over the country, including #virtualproviders and #digitalplatforms However, I know from #PERSONALexperience, and I'll share transparently, everyone in my family sees a counselor. We have all experienced a great deal of #trauma over the last few years (not even including the pandemic) and we work individually and together to assure our #mentalwellness including: my husband, my 17 year old son, and my 15 year old daughter! 👨👩👦👦 🎯 Lifestance has always been transparent, upfront on costs, and accesible to providers! 📊 We actually utilized another digital platform, a competitor of Lifestance, recently, to explore options. *It's important to shop providers and programs to indentify what is most successful and beneficial to your wellness... The new digital paltofrm we picked was awesome too - our son loved it and saw great benefits. However, through a 15 week program we were NEVER connected with a psychiatric provider! An amazing counselor, yes, but not the Psychiatric provider we were told we'd be seeing. After our son had completed the program, in a post treatment survey I mentioned that we were never connected with a provider and although they apologized they admitted that they didn't have any psychiatric providers in their network!!! They did refer us out to a provider down the street, which is fine, the other, local provider is great, but we chose (and paid for) the (comprehensive) digital program, under the understanding that Psychiatric evaluation was apart of the program. My point in many ways is two-fold: What is advertised isn't always real - check in on what you're investing in. AND There is a DIRE #SHORTAGE of #mentalhealth practitioners. #Psychiatry #Psychiatrist #PsychiatricNursePractitioners #PsychNP #BehavorialHealthcareProviderShortage #PhysicianShortage #ProviderShortage #RecruitmentPartner

Relationship-Building 💗 In grad school, we learn about the importance of establishing rapport with caregivers. But it took working in the field for me to realize that the scope we are trained to engage with caregivers in the therapy process is often narrow, shallow, and one-directional. We ask caregivers questions during intake and give them exercises to practice at home, but the relationship-building often ends there. 🤔 Why? A relationship requires an assumption of trust. 🤝 It requires that both parties see each other as reliable and knowledgeable. While the clinician has expertise in communication, the caregiver has expertise in their child. 🧠👶 Sometimes, therapies aren’t as impactful as they could be because we aren’t learning from the parent or engaging with the caregiver as a valuable team member. We can extend the reach of our therapy by: 🗣️Asking caregivers how comfortable they feel executing modeled strategies. 📝Creating practice tasks that involve the caregiver. 🌟Learning about the caregiver’s learning style and individual differences. 🌟 🧠 Accounting for the caregiver’s individual differences when creating tasks. For example, if you encourage more play and have a caregiver with vestibular differences, brainstorm ideas for more stationary play. This honors the caregiver’s needs and shows them they can still engage with their child in a fun way. 📦Thinking outside the box! 💬Asking for feedback and making it safe for them to share honestly. 💡 Incorporating their ideas! When we build strong relationships with caregivers, we build stronger therapy. This requires us to listen, trust the process, be fully present in sessions, and truly seek connection. 🌱 How are you building caregiver relationships? 🌐

Understanding Behavior in Therapy and Education: A Critical Perspective In both therapy and educational settings, it is essential to look beyond a child’s outward behavior and truly understand its underlying purpose. When a child “acts out” or “misbehaves,” do we pause to consider the root cause of the behavior? Biologically based behaviors, such as sensory-seeking actions, require a different approach than learned or acting-out behaviors. For example, some children’s nervous systems are not wired for stillness—they may need movement to regulate themselves, or they may crave vestibular input to help them focus. If the environment isn’t designed to meet these sensory needs, the child’s behavior can be misinterpreted as disruptive. Therapists and educators must delve into the why behind each behavior, whether it’s a biological, sensory, or emotional need. By doing so, we can respond in the most effective way, fostering growth and support. At the heart of this approach is empathy. Every behavior is a form of communication, a signal from the child that we need to understand and address. Only by recognizing the purpose, function, and cause behind behaviors can we provide the most constructive, compassionate response. Let’s continue to work towards environments where all children feel seen, heard, and understood. #Therapy #Education #BehaviorUnderstanding #EmpathyInAction #selfregulation #neurodiverse
