Great news to start the year! Following a comprehensive selection process the Municipality of Groningen selected the team of Shift architecture urbanism, Marlies Rohmer architecture urbanism and LOLA Landscape Architects to design the Campus Esserberg. The Campus will provide international and bilingual education for children and youth aged 0 to 18, located on the picturesque Esserberg estate between Groningen and Haren. The scenic surroundings and the Bossche School architecture of the existing West Wing offer a rich cultural and historical foundation, inspiring us to create a welcoming and enduring school environment. The historical framework of green chambers formed by wooded banks is the carrier of the landscape design. The cultural-historical and landscape typology of the estate gives the campus its spatial identity. Every year, the Doolan Award process sees our expert judges visit the shortlisted buildings, to carefully assess each project's architectural integrity, usability and context, delivery and execution, and sustainability. Our 2024 Doolan Award judging panel included David Kohn of David Kohn Architects, author and journalist Gabriella Bennett and RIAS President Karen Anderson. Here they share their reflections and insights on this year's winning building - John McAslan + Partners' refurbishment of the Burrell Collection: "The Burrell Collection is an outstanding example of problem-solving and future-proofing. [It has] created a better spatial experience...and significantly increased the area available to the public." Urban Densification in Vienna – A Project in Redtenbachergasse In 2014, the City of Vienna adopted the strategy of urban densification as part of the "Urban Development Plan STEP 2025." One of its key goals is to renovate old buildings and create additional living space through vertical extensions. Many property owners and developers have already embraced this opportunity. This approach is also being implemented in Redtenbachergasse, where an existing building is being modernized and extended to provide high-quality living spaces for future residents. How much does it cost to live in the award-winning Accordia development in Cambridge? My next instalment of 'Icons of Architecture' is out, where I argue that new build developments have just as much capacity to become iconic as heritage buildings. Designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Maccreanor Lavington, and Alison Brooks Architects, and constructed by Countryside Partnerships and Redeham Homes, Accordia set a new benchmark for the construction of high density housebuilding in the UK. 🏆 Accordia was the first housing development to win the prestigious Stirling Prize but at the same time highlights the inherent tensions with creating new communities from scratch. It provides a fascinating site that gives us crucial lessons for the future of the new development which we so desperately need. Litstudio: Building, Art, Landscape: Vancouver’s last undeveloped Waterfront has Canada’s busiest port to the east, active railways, a Helijet terminal, and one of Western Canada’s busiest multimodal transit hubs. 2024 has produced unsolicited speculative renderings of its potential. Do they really have the potential to ignite, reinvigorate interest? Does speculative architecture serve the public? When the City decides to move on with this project, it will finally be the last piece that will truly connect Gastown with downtown Vancouver, generate foot traffic, and revitalize both Granville Street and Gastown (which had been hard hit by the pandemic). I am particularly partial to large piers that extend public space outwards to the water- and creatively re-defining the pier, which had been throughout history a landing place and a promenade. Heaven afloat in Rotterdam The remarkable Haven Lofts project in the Netherlands is a groundbreaking development featuring 18 individual floating water villas, setting a new standard as the first floating housing initiative within the Rotterdam harbour basin. Each of these meticulously-designed and innovative homes sought to push the boundaries of sustainable and modern living. One of the key challenges in designing floating houses is managing weight, and the chosen system, with its slim facade and lightweight properties, offered the perfect solution. This combination not only addressed the structural requirements but also enhanced the overall energy efficiency and sustainability of the villas, making them both functional and environmentally conscious. The Haven Lofts project exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to urban waterfront living, merging cutting-edge architectural design with innovative construction technology. For the fourth year, we’re partnering with Dwell Magazine to recognize innovative single family or multifamily fenestration projects with thoughtful and creative uses of natural light. The 2024 awards will honor newly completed residential projects in two categories: single-family and multi-family. Each category will have one winner that exhibits excellence in fenestration and daylighting.   The competition is open to licensed architects, builders, contractors, or other design/build professionals and firms in the U.S. and need to be: Creative in their approach to fenestration and daylighting. Environmentally responsible with safe, healthy living spaces that incorporate recycled, renewable, or otherwise sustainable materials. Structurally innovative in their use of new materials and/or methods. Aesthetically innovative with their use of new forms and finishes. Contextualized and responsive to their surroundings.
