We Asked. You Told Us. We Listened. When building the Good Growth in Practice programme, we spoke to diverse-led SME owners about the challenges they face in growing sustainably. Now, we’re building a programme that responds directly to their needs: 🏗️ Early-Stage Foundations: strong networks, access to paid work with clear routes to commissions, critical business development guidance and administrative support. 📈 Growth-Stage Support: finding and retaining aligned senior talent, better business forecasting, professional development pathways. That’s why we’re creating a programme that delivers: 💫 Practical Solutions: direct access to public & private sector clients, expert-led applied business development masterclasses, operational systems and templates. 🤝 Real Connections: client mentorship and sponsorship, peer support networks and industry partnerships, collaborative opportunities. This isn’t just another support programme—it’s built WITH practices, not FOR them. The future needs a different kind of built environment professional, and we’re designing a curriculum at The London School of Architecture to empower them. I paused Adventa's #FutureOfUs Tour yesterday, to join the amazing Constructive Futures team for a coffee morning in Leeds, as they helped students prepare for the opportunity that is UKREiiF's event in Leeds next week. With a welcomed guest Evan Morse who was keen to network on all things Architecture Did you know we need 1 in 5 school leavers to join the construction industry? No me neither! and clearly some work to be done to address the challenge here. I meet some amazing people and listened to inspiring and motivating speeches from the Constructive Futures Leadership Team Natalie Sarabia-Johnston and Jenny Kitchen as they supported the students. Which got me thinking more about how future tech might help address the challenge and also encourage more people to join the construction industry, as the future of work evolves..... lots of ideas and a video to follow soon. 100% follow these guys, to see the amazing work they do in supporting young people and wider diversity and inclusion agendas...And not forgetting the incredible support from a range of brilliant learning mentors and career advisors all supporting this outstanding initiative. ....oh and they do this all above and beyond their day jobs 👏🏻 Good Luck to all the Student at the event itself next week.... I hope you make some great connections 👊🏻 #construction #FutureOfUs #youthdevelopment #futuretalent #architecture Video Description - A short reel of me heading to a construction future event in Leeds city centre. With footage from the coffee morning event and view across the Leeds city landscape… which is a continuous building site.

Our Policy Lead, Stephen Caulfield, was in Glasgow yesterday for #LearningPlacesScotland 2024. This conference and exhibition brings together learners, educators, designers, consultants, and manufacturers for discussion and collaboration on how we deliver high-quality learning spaces for all. Though there is much work still to be done, we are encouraged by the growing recognition of the role that school and college estate design has on the experiences of people with Additional Support Needs (ASN) - and how trends towards expansive, open-plan (and noisy) spaces is negatively impacting the experiences of people with differences in sensory profile and social communication.
That’s a wrap for Learning Places Scotland 2024! Paul Vick is lecturing on the above topic at The Gresham Society in the City of London with examples from the practice’s work on Th 23rd May 1500-1545 online. How badly is it all going in terms of climate change and development solutions? Nearly 40 years ago, the Brundtland report identified political and economic issues (rather than technological ones) as the greatest challenges affecting climate change - so has anything improved since then? The answer might lie further back in time when de Tocqueville in the early C19th maintained that power may be more distributed than we think. We have agency, individually and together, to affect change. In today’s world there are already design solutions and approaches that we can use to tackle climate change, and this is both empowering, and a form of power and profitability. Founder of Paul Vick architects, Paul Vick, tackles some shibboleths in a talk that looks at whether we are asking the right questions about profitability and value. They discuss some of the approaches they use to understand value and if they really are mutually exclusive; and how good design thinking can create value from the knowledge we have, and the knowledge we continue to gain. One such question the architect focussed on was ‘what is the value of creating a building that helps you live longer (for you, your users, clients)’ And ‘How do you create and innovate in a world which is often complex, uncertain, unaccounted and unaccountable?’ Where ‘art’ is the changing of perceptions and ‘design’ problem solving, good architecture addresses both. The talk illustrates with projects the practice has and is undertaking to create this profitability. There are questions it has going forward for us all. 23.05.24 1500-1545 online. Approx 20minute talk plus Q+A. Taking place on the eve of what would have been Stephen Lawrence’s 50th birthday, the launch of “Building Inclusion: A Practical Guide to EDI in Architecture and the Built Environment” by Marsha Ramroop FRSA FIEDP, comes at a significant and fitting time for the sector. Acting as a call to action for leading experts, industry professionals, advocates, postgraduate students, academics and EDI networks to gather, reflect and move forward to bring about tangible change in the sector. The SLRC honour the profound impact that Stephen’s legacy and the Lawrence family’s fight for justice and equity have made within this sector and continues to do. By highlighting the deep-rooted structural inequalities and taking action to help aspiring, yet underrepresented architects to overcome barriers to unleash their potential. Building Inclusion: A Practical Guide to EDI in Architecture and the Built Environment is a combination of advice and frameworks for inclusive behaviours, as well as the policies, procedures and practices to deliver these outcomes. The book will be available to buy on the evening with a percentage of the proceeds from the book going to the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation. #buildinginclusion #architecture #stephenlawrence #stephenlawrenceday #diversity #inclusion

Mentoring young architects, teaching soft skills, building company culture developing communities and promoting minorities in the profession, Lise Bornstein, AIA, Partner at KFA Architecture, talks shop with Christian Giordano, AIA, Mancini Duffy. Stressing the importance of teaching practical business knowledge, she states, “You can be a phenomenal problem solver, designer and detailer, but if you don’t know how to market, if your soft skills are lacking, if you don’t know how to resent, listen, communicate and budget your time effectively, then that (design/problem solving) talent is not as effective as can be. “ Explaining why her 75-person firm has chosen to essentially stick the Los Angeles market, their belief is that architects are best poised to serve communities if they are actually living in those communities. Another interesting fact about KFA is that they are more than 50 percent female. She notes that the key here is having people in leadership to represent the diversity you’re seeking for a firm. She laments the fact that in the U.S., just 35 percent of women are licensed and 7 percent are partners. And for minorities, these numbers are much lower. Wrapping up the interview, Bornstein states, “As we build out our cities to be livable spaces, as architects, our most important role is to make sure we are listening and being an advocate for the human experience in our cities.” #architecture #DEI #urbanevelopment #buildingdesign
