This is great insight from a very busy recruiter! It's super important to be very specific about a role you are interested in. If you hit the majority of the qualifications definitely express that! If you don't hit the majority of qualifications (or don't understand what the organization is asking) you can reach out and ask that as well. There are a ton of recruiters that are veterans that 100 percent want to help but they need more information! I personally understand the struggle of not understanding what a job description is actually asking for. The organization doesn't understand what we did in the military as well.... It's a difficult situation to be in! This is why it's crucially important to knock out an interest survey with your bases Military & Family Readiness Center and discover your gaps (experience/education). The sooner you discover your "why" and knock out the requirements to get there....the better off you will be! You need time (5 plus years) to use Tuition Assistance to knock out your degree/certs before separating or retiring if you're startingfrom scratch. This is easier said than done while serving as it's extremely difficult to balance work/deployments/family life/and school! All you do from there is create a master resume and find positions that match your "why". Create a targeted resume from your master resume....THEN reach out to recruiters! I’ve got to vent about a recurring issue we’re seeing lately. We’ve been receiving applications for positions that clearly state they are ON-SITE (ie NOT REMOTE). We put in the effort to detail expectations in the job description, and yet, when we extend offers, candidates back out—often at the last minute—citing remote work preferences. It's disheartening for everyone involved. This not only wastes valuable time and resources for our team, but it also impacts the overall hiring process and slows down our clients' projects. To all job seekers: Please read the job descriptions thoroughly and consider if the role aligns with your preferences before applying. Transparency is key! In an employer market, remote jobs might be less available and you’ll see more competition for those that are open. So how do you stand out? One important thing to do: Go beyond just applying. We know, employers already often ask for a lot during interviews. Plus, finding jobs is a full-time job itself. We are with you in that thinking. However, in these competitive markets it means you’ll need to put in the extra effort. What does this mean exactly? Well… 👉 Tailoring your resume more to each individual role you apply to. It’s good practice to do that regardless, but it will become more necessary today. You can use AI tools to assist, as many are very good. Say hi to tools like Teal, Jobscan, Rezi, and Ramped. 👉 Highlight skills and achievements that allude to you being effective at remote work. Things related to communication, managing people, technology skills, being proactive vs. reactive, etc. Anything that highlights you can thrive in remote work, even if you have no experience working fully-remote. 👉 Niche your job applications down. It might seem like a numbers game to get a remote job – the more you apply then the more chances at interviews. But from our own experiences and countless insights from others, it rarely works out well. Instead, focus down on key industries, specific titles, certain benefits, etc. – and go the extra mile to show you the best fit for those specific roles. 👉 Start to network with people that you are connected with on LinkedIn, in online communities, in past roles, etc. Begin having convos or sending messages, see how you can help each other, and get active with your personal brand.
