Most of us read them when searching for and comparing products and services: #onlinereviews. And when reviews include #photos / #images, most of us look at them. But do photos / images increase #review helpfulness? Two interesting studies provide answers: Gizem Ceylan, Kristin Diehl, and Davide Proserpio (Journal of Marketing Research) find that: -photos generally increase helpfulness -greater similarity between photos and text (making it easier for consumers to process the review) increase review helpfulness even more -the similarity effect weakens when ease of processing (e.g., language difficulty, low image quality) is reduced Raoul Kübler, Lara Lobschat, Lina Welke, and Hugo van der Meij (Journal of Retailing) reveal that: -images increase (decrease) review helpfulness of positive (negative) reviews -images increase (decrease) review helpfulness for hedonic (experience) products -the positive effect of images is stronger for a) reviewers with a high reputation, b) multiple, differently composed images, and c) images depicting the product in use (vs. showing the packshot) Great insights related to the contingencies of #usergeneratedcontent effectiveness.
