The significant VC investment into nature restoration provider Nattergal Ltd represents a point of inflection for global Nature restoration - bringing in business and creating a strong business model for boots-on-the-ground restoration of degraded land. With a few exceptions, #NatureRestoration has historically been funded by philanthropy or governments, while business has ultimately been out of balance with the natural world and only paying lip service to nature. But, catalyzed by regulation this can shift. In this case, the 2021 Environment Act, #BiodiversityNetGain (BNG) in England, which requires housing developers to deliver a minimum of 10% increase in biodiversity compared to what was on site before, to achieve planning approval. With Aviva's participation, this deal also highlights the significant risks of nature degradation to our economy (as well as our souls, well-being, and intergenerational responsibilities) and reflects greater agency amongst large corporations to #ActOnNature. For the #CleantechSpace, regulations like this mean greater demand pull for: 🛰 Monitoring and Assessment technologies e.g. eDNA or satellite-enabled remote biomass analysis 🌊 Prevention technologies e.g. Wastewater treatment or smart fishing nets 🐅 Expertise and capacity for nature restoration 🌎 Funding for greater research to enable better understanding of the natural world We don't have all the tools on our tool belt yet or the global expertise to avoid inaccuracies or mistakes. At the FT Live Moral Money Summit Asia, Lucita Jasmin, RGE’s Group Sustainability Director, discussed “How to manage the trade-offs between long-term corporate sustainability goals and short-term costs” alongside Melissa Moi (UOB), Andrew Taylor (Tate & Lyle) and Roy Ling (VINFAST ), with moderator Patrick Temple-West (Financial Times). Lucita highlighted three key factors that have helped us to stay on track with our sustainability goals and deliver on what truly matters. Endorsement from the highest level is critical. In RGE, our sustainability champion is one of our shareholders, Anderson Tanoto, who has always been telling us that we have to make good in our sustainability commitments and be accountable for our action or inaction. Sustainability has to be built into the fundamental business approach as increasingly, it is about how operations are run vis-à-vis merely planning sustainability into the operations. All RGE business groups have 2030 commitments which are translated to KPIs, feeding into annual budgets and performance contracts. Since we are working with operations, we have to speak its language. This means we need to have clear goals and specific KPIs, quantifiable business metrics and robust governance. However, the biggest question is who is paying for sustainability? Our approach is to impose a conservation levy on ourselves – we have been setting aside $1 for our conservation fund for every ton of fibre we bring to the mill. Last year alone, we have allocated US$16 million to this fund. The Sustainable Finance Coalition's current incubator is developing the Building Blocks and implementation pathway to an outcomes fund focused on the marine sector. Whilst there is no standard definition of an 'outcomes fund', in broad terms, it is a commitment to pay for social or environmental outcomes, rather than inputs or activities. The niche group of experts in our incubator are actively working through existing frameworks, evidence and ecosystem challenges to enable an increased flow of funding to ocean-linked organisations to facilitate scaled impact in the marine sector. Today we adopt the FCA SDR ‘Sustainability Impact’ label. Our FP WHEB Sustainability Fund will become the FP WHEB Sustainability Impact Fund and we have published our updated Prospectus and Consumer Facing Disclosure on our website: https://lnkd.in/eBywVZJk We are thrilled to have the label, but it will be a pyrrhic victory if the market as a whole does not embrace the new regime.
