interesting read this one, travelling is something most of us do without thinking, I'm actually on holiday as we speak! taking a holiday is meant to be a break from reality and relaxing, so why shouldn't we travel just because a family member has autism? Unfortunately traveling can be a huge trigger for anyone who is neurodivergent, and therefore be extremely stressful for the whole family... think about what the triggers are (noise, space, smells, no routine) and plan something interactive to prevent this being an issue (eardefenders, extremely leg room, favourite toys and treats) and speak to the staff! get specialist boarding if you can, explain what may trigger them (maybe you need to know when the food is coming so you can prepare the autistic person that there will be a sensory change/ get out their smelly toys or salts), get staff to help with "now, next and then" now we have our seat belts on to help fly, next when they say we take them off, then we put the iPad on the tray ect
Our very own Stuart Spielman, spoke with USA Today about how traveling with his autistic son Zak has brought their family together. They’ve learned to stay mindful of Zak’s needs, choosing activities, restaurants, and destinations that he, along with the entire family, will enjoy. “The joys of seeing someone you care about kicking sand on the beach, just being content being in a different place and being happy, it means something special. With Zak, he’s part of our family, sometimes it’s harder to travel, but it’s just so important.” https://lnkd.in/gd-UGi62

Accessibility is important to wheelchair users so they can be independent. Accessibility starts at the front desk, elevator accessibility, and accessibility of the hotel room. Once inside the room, is there enough room for your wheelchair to maneuver? Then, is the bathroom accessible? Can your wheelchair fit inside the room? Are light switches at an accessible height? Can you reach the towels? Recently, I traveled to Santa Barbara to work with my team at UCSB and stayed at a hotel on campus. Opening the door to a hotel room can sometimes be a struggle. However, at this hotel, the key card automatically opened the door. Once inside, there was plenty of room to maneuver my chair. The bathroom had a step-in shower, but the towels were beyond my reach, and the sink was too high for a wheelchair user. This is a step in the right direction, but there is still a lot to be done in the field of accessibility. #cerebralpalsy #wheelchairuser #awareness #advocate #motivationalspeaker #athlete #strong #businessowner #storytelling #contentcreator #leader #passion #proud #disability #disabilities #personofcolor #inclusion #inspiration #journey #motivation #positivevibes #respect #educate #powerful #lifestyle

Time for a TUESDAY TIP from Anderson Center Consulting and Training! If you're making plans to take a vacation this summer, there is much you can do to prepare your autistic or neurodivergent loved ones so that everyone can have a wonderful time. First of all, consider destinations and lodging that will provide ample space for relaxing and decompressing. Also: consider pulling up some photos online to show your autistic or neurodivergent vacationer what to expect; visuals can reduce anxiety that comes from worrying about what might lie ahead. And - if you can call airports/transportation hubs and your hotel/resort in advance to request that you can check in early or move through lines more quickly, that can make a big difference as well. These are just a few of many things you can do to make your time away from home as enjoyable as possible. And if you would benefit from an in-home consultation or parent training on this or any number of topics, reach out to our team today: acct@andersoncares.org. #actuallyautistic #neurodiversitytraining #neurodiversity #autismtraining #specialneedsparents #specialneedsteachers #specialneeds #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #autisticemployees #neurodivergentemployees #workplaceculture #neurodiverseworkplace #neurodiverseteam #community #andersoncenterconsultingandtraining #corporatetraining #communitytraining #autismworkshops #neurodiversitytraining #inclusion #accessibility #diversity #equity #socialimpact #intellectualdisabilities #ASE #ASC #ACCT

We attend, sponsor, and speak at a lot of events throughout the year and we’d love to see more events factor accessibility and inclusivity into their event planning. Here are some tips to keep in mind: 1. Seating Variety: Offer chairs with and without arms, and avoid those flimsy plastic ones! People with physical disabilities or back issues will thank you. 2. Scheduled Breaks: Don’t overload your event with nonstop sessions. Frequent breaks give attendees time to stretch, recharge, and stay engaged. 3. Quiet Zone: Create a peaceful space with comfy seating, soft lighting, and plants. No talking or phones — just pure relaxation. Let’s make events better for all! 💡 #Conferences #EventPlanning #InclusionMatters #AccessibilityForAll

Outdoor play is more than just fun—it's essential for children's holistic development. Here are 5 benefits of including more outdoor time for your children. 1️⃣ Physical Health: Beyond the fresh air and sunshine, outdoor play fosters physical health by encouraging active movement, enhancing coordination, and building strength. 2️⃣ Cognitive Development: It nurtures cognitive development, as children explore their surroundings, problem-solve, and engage in imaginative play. 3️⃣ Social Skills: Socially, outdoor play promotes teamwork, communication, and conflict-resolution skills as children interact with peers in unstructured environments. 4️⃣ Emotional Regulation: Emotionally, it provides a sense of freedom, boosts mood, and reduces stress, fostering overall well-being. 5️⃣ Environmental Stewardship: Exposure to nature sparks curiosity, instills a sense of wonder, and cultivates environmental stewardship from a young age. In today's technology-driven world, prioritizing outdoor play is crucial for ensuring children's optimal growth and development. As always, do your best with what is available to you. With warmer weather coming up, hopefully, we can all get outdoors more often! #outdoorplay #childhooddevelopment #outdoorlearning

Children are natural explorers and discoverers! Outdoor play can help them develop more comprehensive knowledge about their world as they have chances to watch, observe, predict, and learn in the moment. For example, they may encounter and judge situations like, “How deep is that puddle?” “I wonder if I can jump over it?” or “Maybe I’ll run around it?” Play benefits adults, too. Even brief outdoor experiences can help carry us through times when we can’t take an extended period of time to explore outside. When there is stress at work and all you get is a 15 minute break, walk outside, breathe in the air and take in the calming effect of nature on your senses. In your own backyard, or on a faraway trip to an unfamiliar place, breathe in the air using slow deep breaths. Idea: Take a "smell scavenger hunt" with your kids. Notice the smells in the air and encourage children to do the same. You will all be lowering your stress levels, building resilience and self-regulation skills, and strengthening connections to your surroundings. -Are you on our email list? This article highlights the reason why we've spent a year creating 21 Active Many of us take for granted that we can exercise when we want, book a class at a moment's notice, or join a gym without much thought. But those rules don't apply to everyone. If you have a disability (visible or invisible), a learning disability or a mental health condition, your choices can be limited. This is not how things should be. Why shouldn't there be more opportunities which cater to a wider range of audiences? Credit to Mencap and the Delta Gym in Omagh, (NI) for providing fitness and activities for ALL. This type of activity shouldn't be a side note, a box ticked, it's a requirement that should be offered to everyone. This is about companies understanding that our society is made up of different people who have different needs, then listening to them and seeing how they can work with them. Inequality has many faces. Ignoring it doesn't make it disappear, it only serves to push it away from the mainstream conversation. It's worth noting that finding solutions for a more accessible world can be beneficial to the whole of society; you never know when you might need them. I'd like to have conversations with David Lloyd Clubs PureGym The Gym Group Gymbox Serco Leisure Everyone Active - SLM to change the narrative and find out what can be done.
