I love a live stream, next to video it's my favourite form of digital content. People coming together, broadcasting live across their digital networks and interacting with their listeners...its connection on a different level. There are now thousands of regular live-streamed events covering deeply technical topics, all the way through to shows that are made to entertain, bring people together and build communities...some, even build around Burrito's, or so I've heard...🤔 Broadcasting across multiple channels simultaneously, sharing perspectives and insight and making real connection through conversation. Another thing I like about live streams is the ability to revisit and repurpose the content by chopping it up and using small sections to support a point of view. One of the best live streamers I know is Tracy Borreson, a modern professional who has really embraced the live stream medium. I was fortunate to be invited onto Tracy's 'Crazy Stupid Marketing' livestream last week. It's always a pleasure speaking with Tracy, she is a first-class host who always gets the conversation going....and I love the fact that there is no script, just a theme, and she takes her guests on a journey...brilliant 👏 The theme for this show was 'Social Enablement', during our chat Tracy asked me what I mean by "Influence"...and this unfolded...I hope it makes sense. Totally agree! 📺 📲 More often than not, viewers today are engaging with two screens during live events. - usually main broadcast on linear TV or OTT, plus something social or digital-first on their devices. SO HOW CAN YOU GET THE VIEWER TWICE? Creating unique, complementary content alongside your main broadcast - like: - An interactive fan show - Alternative commentary - A redzone-style format can boost engagement and capture the same audience twice, potentially doubling revenue from each viewer! As Ed Abis rightly pointed out, budget constraints can often hold back this type of innovation. But utilisation of cloud and SaaS can remove this barrier. Gone are the days of hefty CAPEX investments, and instead, flexible, usage-based models make these strategies more accessible and ROI-friendly. My definition of madness. Sticking linear broadcast live feeds on YouTube and expecting amazing results. Unfortunately I see this happen all the time! And I get it. Budgets and priorities can get in the way. But audiences on these platforms are expecting something different - they’re looking for content that’s more interactive, more personal, and offers deeper insights. And crafting experiences for the platform can then sit alongside traditional broadcasts, amplifying reach and engagement Vs being seen as cannibalistic. Meet audiences where they are and give them a reason to lean in. PS.
