🔔 Recently, a joint letter was sent by Marcel Galjee, Katherina Reiche and Tom Hautekiet, the chairs of NLHydrogen, German Hydrogen Council (NWR) and Belgian Hydrogen Council (BHC), respectively, addressing the members of the European Parliament. The letter emphasized the necessity of supporting the development of the hydrogen economy in Europe, specifically in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium. 📣 They highlighted the current challenges market players face in these countries when implementing their projects and urged the new EU Parliament and Commission to: 1. Close the cost gap by alleviating initial production cost and dedicated support of off-taker sectors. Smart financing constructions will be needed to enable projects to take off, and 2. Improving the regulatory framework by developing a more regionally tailored regulatory framework to enable more flexibility in achieving the targets set by the European legislation. This letter has been appeared in different media in the three countries, 👉 https://lnkd.in/eP_AB37e (in Germany) 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFgNiiUZ (in the Netherlands) 👉 https://lnkd.in/ehREdKsZ (in Belgium) and the English and Dutch version can be read in this post. #EUparliament #EUCouncil #HydrogenEurope #hydrogeneconomy #energytransition

🔋 #Hydrogen's role as a key economic driver is becoming increasingly important in Europe. Despite the high demand expected in Central and Northern Europe, these regions face the challenge of insufficient #RenewableEnergy resources for #HydrogenProduction. This scenario paves the way for significant hydrogen imports into the #EU, supported by dedicated #pipelines and maritime routes to enhance distribution throughout the Union. 🌍 Italy, Spain, and Portugal are uniquely positioned to play pivotal roles in the European hydrogen economy, given their existing projects and targets aimed at enhancing production capabilities and leveraging their strategic locations. These developments mark a committed stride towards a sustainable and resilient energy future in Europe. 💡 Click the link for an in-depth report on the state and outlook of hydrogen development in Italy, Spain and Portugal: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dZXynUzb #RolandBerger #SustainableEnergy

📓 The European Court of Auditors has assessed the EU's hydrogen strategy, deeming its 2030 goals unrealistic and unfounded. The ambitious target of producing 10 million tons of clean hydrogen annually by 2030 lacks thorough research and is driven more by political will than practicality. 🔃 The institution calls for a rehaul of the EU hydrogen strategy. Industry organization Hydrogen Europe also advocates for a revision of the plans. Read more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ebgnReZY

The European Commission has approved Germany’s plans to introduce a €3bn ($3.2bn) scheme to support the construction of a hydrogen core network — a necessary green light under the EU’s state-aid rules that aim to prevent market distortion. “The German scheme approved today will significantly contribute to the development of a European hydrogen market while minimising any potential distortions to competition.” How will the German government ensure that the hydrogen network operators manage the financial risks and repayment obligations associated with the KfW loans, especially in scenarios where hydrogen demand might not meet expectations? https://lnkd.in/eBywDiZG

💬 “The EU needs a compelling, comprehensive and focused #hydrogen implementation agenda with a budget, a timeline and a map of institutional and industrial partners.” As the European Union 🇪🇺 forms its new parliament, Hydrogen Europe’s CEO Jorgo Chatzimarkakis has called for the bloc to support the H2 industry as part of the #GreenDeal. Public investments are key to boost #decarbonization investments and ensure global competitiveness amid efforts to secure a supply of clean energy. As Chatzimarkakis puts it, it’s time for a “bold long-term vision and swift short-term measures.” 🚀 https://lnkd.in/ewWhJeBg

Today BloombergNEF published the second part of its #Hydrogen Supply Outlook 2024 series, a deep dive into our regional and country-level forecasts. Some major takeaways below: ✔ The #US is set to become the single largest supplier of clean hydrogen by 2030 thanks to tax credits and a large blue hydrogen project pipeline in advanced planning. Many of these projects target export to Asia and Europe. ✔ #Europe may not need large quantities of overseas imports by 2030 to meet domestic quotas for hydrogen use. Announced policies could lead to enough domestic production and intra-European trade with #Iberia or the Nordics is likely enough to fulfill quotas across EU members. Of course, cheaper molecules and a lack of pipeline infrastructure could still lead to some demand for shipped imports from overseas. ✔ Prospective export markets with large announced project pipelines are likely to fall behind their ambitions for 2030. Project progress in Latin America, #Australia, the Middle East and Africa is constrained by low local demand and export policies that have a limited impact before 2030. Subscribers can access the full report and a list of all 477 projects we considered for our forecast: https://lnkd.in/d4cwk64m

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) recently published a report scrutinizing the EU’s hydrogen strategy, highlighting several challenges and areas for improvement. While these critiques are important, it is equally crucial to acknowledge how the European Commission is actively addressing these issues and shaping a promising future for hydrogen in Europe. The RePowerEU targets are ambitious and guide the world’s largest economic block on its decarbonization journey, but these targets are not immediate and rather serve as an aspiration. The Commission is progressively enhancing the framework for hydrogen trade through a wide set of regulations, including the Renewable Energy Directive, FuelEU Maritime and ReFuelEU Aviation, addressing both the supply and demand of hydrogen. The market needs clarity and direction and these regulations provide exactly that for the decarbonization of transport and heavy industries. Ursula von der Leyen, newly re-elected as President of the European Commission, has outlined political guidelines for 2024-2029 that further bolster these efforts, focusing on sustainable prosperity, competitive clean industries and robust international cooperation. The European Commission has responded to the feedback and criticism from the ECA. Read their response letter: https://lnkd.in/dhKUeeGc

‘International co-operation is key’ to advance hydrogen deployment. By Edward Laity Germany, the European Commission and leaders within the hydrogen sector have agreed that decisive, synchronised action from governments and industry is needed to advance hydrogen deployment. Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck, and the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, Maroš Šefčovič, met with a global delegation of Hydrogen Council executives to discuss progress in the sector ahead of 2030. In Europe, top priorities include full implementation of the enabling measures on the hydrogen demand and midstream side and tackling the legislative complexity to ensure more projects reach the final investment decision (FID) stage. https://lnkd.in/dt6ufeCU
