This autumn, the world’s first commercial-scale seaweed farm will open within the wind farm ‘Hollandse Kust Zuid’ (HKZ), located about 18 kilometers off the coast of Scheveningen in the North Sea. North Sea Farm 1, initiated by North Sea Farmers with funding from Amazon’s Right Now Climate Fund, is a floating farm located between wind turbines where seaweed cultivation can be tested and improved. Scientific research will also be conducted on site into the potential of seaweed farms to capture carbon. By locating the farm in previously empty space between turbines, the project is able to expand seaweed cultivation in the otherwise heavily used North Sea. There is more than enough space in the current and future planned wind farms in the North Sea to scale up production to 1 million tons of fresh seaweed per year by 2040. This is expected to contribute to the capture and avoidance of millions of tons of CO2. For more information please refer to the attached press release. On behalf of the project consortium with Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), Deltares, Silvestrum Climate Associates, Simply Blue Group, Van Oord and marine contractor Doggerland Offshore we would like to extend our thanks to Amazon and in particular Roeland D., Dirk van den Bogaart, Laura Huff and Steve Kellett in making this project possible. We would also like to thank Vattenfall's Willemijn van Meurs, Sharon Van Hemert, Iris Menger and Martin ter Braak for their support in obtaining the co-use permit. North Sea Farmers Good luck and pls, keep us posted. Just a note: "By locating the farm in previously empty space" No such thing as empty space in the North Atlantic. Take a peek at the pics from NASA's PACE satellites [data Spring 2023]. The chlorophyll indicates the presence of phytoplankton, thus the seaweeds farm would be displacing Mother Nature by removing the nutrients that belong to this plankton. Any claims regarding the possible benefits of the farm, must include the loss of the local plankton.

Eef Brouwers I'm thrilled to hear you've reached such an important milestone! Congratulations. The opportunities for using offshore wind farms not only for farming seaweed but also as sea life preservation zones where big factory trawlers cannot disrupt fish breeding grounds, is immense

Prachtig voorbeeld van co-use in een windpark op zee. Goed dat jullie, North Sea Farmers, deze stap (durven) zetten.

Pretty good at renewable energy, spatial planning and the EU.

Fascinating! Has the OWF been microsited as to be able to handle having a seaweed farm, or has the planning of the farm been made independently from the OWF?
