As people shift from driving to walking, cycling, and using public transportation, road safety becomes more critical than ever. That’s because road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death and disability across the globe. This year’s 7th edition of United Nations Global Road Safety Week highlights sustainable transport and taking action to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries. Both play a major role in the work we do as transportation and city planning engineers. We partner with governments and agencies worldwide on active transportation projects, helping our clients to create safer, healthier communities and more sustainable and equitable societies.

Transport will be one of the topics at the upcoming CUDA symposium in Brisbane. So I thought it timely to repost this article on putting pedestrians first in transport and infrastructure planning. Transport planners and engineers will be familiar with both the Safe System approach and the Movement and Place framework. The implicit assumption is that these approaches will put pedestrians first. But will they?  A universal design approach takes and inclusive whole of population view. It acknowledges that pedestrians are diverse and have varying abilities in negotiating street infrastructure. 📢 Another Exciting New Publication from Our Research Team!  🚀 In this new study, our researchers Mehrnaz Asadi, M. Baran Ulak, and Karst Geurs in collaboration with Wendy Weijermars from SWOV developed a cutting-edge methodological framework for conducting zone-based traffic safety and accessibility analyses. 📝 This innovative approach integrates route choice modelling and four-step modelling (including trip purpose, origin-destination, and alternative routes), resulting in a novel zone-based crash risk estimation that factors in traffic crashes and trip characteristics. 📊 The findings also showed the importance of considering route choice variations in accessibility analysis to avoid overestimating accessibility levels. #Accessibility #TrafficSafety #RouteChoice #Methodology Read more here 👇

The costs and benefits of transport users are not equally distributed in cities. In this paper we explore spatial correlations between zone-based crash risks and potential job accessibility for cyclists in the city of Utrecht. We also make a methodological contribution by including multiple routes for each OD pair in accessibility modelling, avoiding biases associated with shortest path estimates. Nicole Odell is currently attending the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) conference and presenting her work with Spin and NC State Transportation Department. In mapping e-scooter rides, the far majority of rides are on-campus and within a half-mile of campus. Most are at night - probably quicker, perhaps safer, rides from local bars, restaurants, friends' apartments back to dorms and housing. Maybe from the libraries back to dorms. 🤓 But, maybe e-scooters are being used as quicker, safer alternatives to get home late at night. (We have no crash./injury data, just GPS.) In qualitative work, students and faculty report feeling safer using, and around those using, e-scooters and e-bikes while on campus, as opposed to off. On campus, we are more accustomed to looking for and being around multiple mobilities. And vehicular traffic speeds are much slower. Work with Eleni Bardaka, Deepti Adlakha, Oriol Marquet.
