In the realm of urban development, the fusion of good governance principles and local-scale spatial planning is a vital but often overlooked dynamic. Good governance encompasses elements such as transparency, accountability, and public participation, while spatial planning entails the meticulous organisation of land use and resources to facilitate sustainable, equitable, and prosperous communities. https://lnkd.in/dVsza-jR

The Australian Government has today released the Draft National Urban Policy outlining the Government’s goals and objectives to enable our urban areas to be liveable, equitable, productive, sustainable and resilient. The Policy includes a shared vision for sustainable growth in our cities and suburbs, that has been committed to by all Australian Governments. Transport is fundamental to well-functioning cities and urban areas, and AITPM advocates for integrated transport and land use planning at all levels. The Policy seeks to better integrate an urban lens across policy-making to ensure future Australian Government policies, programs and investment are supporting sustainable growth in urban places, and this is to be facilitated by cross-portfolio engagement on urban policy matters. AITPM believes that transport portfolios are critical to this process. As the voice of Australia's transport community, AITPM will be engaging in the consultation on this important national policy document, which closes 5 July. https://lnkd.in/ggH5ePWu

It is our mission at UN-Habitat to ensure that the repositioning of sustainable urbanization as a key contributor to policymaking will result in better and more integrated urban development strategies. It is important to close the gap between spatial planning and economic planning. Sustainable urbanization requires cities and human settlements that are well-led and well-planned, yet many lack the capacity, capability or resources to respond. The Commonwealth has the potential to transform the way in which it does business to achieve a uniquely Commonwealth response to the challenges and opportunities of urbanization. “One of the challenges of the Group Areas Act is spatial dislocation, with many black people still living furthest from cities, unlike in other developing countries. This results in high transport costs and expensive business operations in urban areas, even with infrastructure support. Therefore, addressing the informal sector requires a focus on urban development.” - Haroon Bhorat, Chair: Investment Committee #UrbanPlanning #EconomicInequality #InformalSector
