I was very happy to have an in-depth conversation with Ulrike Wollenschlaeger on current trends and challenges in Supply Chain Management and logistics for German trade magazine TextilWirtschaft.
We talked about the investments of the Otto Group in our logistics centers in Altenkundstadt and Ilowa (more on that soon!) and the increasing volatility and AI in supply chain for example. One part of the conversation I’d like to highlight though, is robotics in our logistics center and especially the interplay between our colleagues and the robots.
I think it’s important to emphasize that this is not just a technological project.
The importance of transparent communication, addressing questions and cultural change can hardly be overemphasized. That’s why we develop different formats of communication and learning – in cooperation with our colleagues. And we are very clear in saying “no, this robot will not take away your job”. And when everyone is on board, we can truly use the benefits of technology and achieve better and more consistent service for our customers, especially during peak times such as Black Friday.

🎤 In today's Red Sofa interview with Mercedes Figueroa, Head of Transportation Operations for Stellantis North America, sponsored by Unipart Logistics, spoke to our Chief Content Officer Christopher Ludwig to discuss the need for resilience and flexibility in logistics during these unpredictable times.
Mercedes highlighted the importance of accurate forecasting and collaboration with logistics partners to build a responsive supply chain. By enhancing real-time communication with providers and increasing digitalisation, Stellantis can react swiftly to changes, reducing costs and improving efficiency across the network.
One exciting development is the potential use of AI and data-driven insights to optimise transport operations. As Mercedes pointed out, “There’s a lot of data, but how we use it to improve capacity and performance is key.” Stellantis is also focusing on early collaboration with engineering and procurement to ensure smarter packaging and more efficient logistics from the start.

💡 Renault Group’s Logistics Transformation!
The automotive industry is no stranger to logistical challenges, and Renault Group was no exception. Faced with fragmented distribution systems, outdated equipment, and the absence of a regional warehouse for France, their after-sales logistics required a complete overhaul. Enter the OTAGO project—a bold initiative to centralize operations and modernize their supply chain.
Through a strategic partnership with Exotec®, Renault integrated the innovative Skypod® system into their Villeroy warehouse, achieving groundbreaking results:
✅ Next-day delivery for orders placed as late as 5:30 PM, enhancing customer satisfaction.
✅ Consolidation of 80% of French business into a single warehouse, streamlining logistics and cutting processing times.
✅ A stellar 99.7% customer satisfaction rate, with over 15,000 product references integrated and a target of 20,000 on the horizon.
✅ Drastic efficiency gains, reducing order processing time from 120 minutes to just 15 minutes, with peak capacity of 4,000 lines per hour.
Renault Group also prioritized sustainability by utilizing 67,000 recycled plastic bins and integrating cutting-edge machinery to optimize operations further. As shared by Louis Szukics, Warehouse Engineering Manager:
"We are satisfied with the results achieved so far and are preparing to finalize the organizational transformation around this new facility."

Congrats to the masterminds behind the Mobile Robotic Fulfillment System in #intralogistics - Mick Mountz, Dr. Peter Wurman , and Prof. Dr. Raffaello D'Andrea. They will be inducted into the Logistics Hall of Fame in Berlin on December 5! Looking forward to meeting you at Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr.
And many thanks for sharing insights about the history of Kiva Systems / Amazon Robotics and your strategies with me - which made it easy to write a thrilling story. I would like to share two details which might be worth reading for start-ups in the community:
Firstly, according to your strategy new technologies should not be developed in the laboratory and then offered to the industry. Rather, founders should first identify a central problem in an industry and then look for a solution - and always seek feedback from potential customers.
And secondly, even if it seems financially tempting to have the production of hardware and software carried out by external partners: Production must initially be carried out internally as far as possible - because the solution must be reliable and constantly improved.

The jury has spoken! 🏆
We are thrilled to share that the brilliant minds behind the Mobile Robotic Fulfillment System in intralogistics - Mick Mountz (59), Dr. Peter Wurman (59), and Prof. Dr. Raffaello D'Andrea (57) - will be inducted into the Logistics Hall of Fame in 2024. 🎉 Their pioneering work with Kiva Systems, founded in 2003, has transformed the logistics landscape, enabling same-day, error-free delivery for countless e-commerce businesses.
Thanks to their innovation, logistics teams no longer walk the aisles to pick orders; instead, autonomous mobile robots (AMR) bring shelves directly to picking stations, revolutionizing efficiency. 🤖📦
"Mountz, Wurman, and D'Andrea have set a global standard with their goods-to-person concept, which is now the backbone of many e-commerce and omnichannel operations," said Anita Würmser, Executive Jury Chairwoman of the Logistics Hall of Fame. Her statement reflects the consensus of a distinguished jury of 70 experts from 13 countries, representing business, science, politics, and media. 🌍💡
The official induction will take place at a gala reception on December 5, 2024, at the Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr in Berlin. ✨
