Shellfish farming is a predominantly extensive culture form dedicated to the breeding of bivalve molluscs. The production process involves the sowing of young mussels, mostly of natural origin, in marine or lagoon areas particularly suitable for their rapid growth. The bred organisms feed and mature by exploiting the plankton present in the environment in which they are sown. The farming of bivalve molluscs represents a great opportunity for food production in the near future: 🌟 Bivalves are rich in noble proteins and polyunsaturated fatty acids, fundamental for a healthy human diet. 🌿 They are farmed in a sustainable way as they do not need antibiotics or added nutrients. 🌊 They offer numerous ecosystem services: - Fix carbon by removing CO2 from the environment. - Filter seawater, eliminating eutrophication. - Create bio-reefs and areas suitable for numerous marine species. The Erasmus+ OPTIMA project, by involving partners from Spain, France, Greece, Italy, and Ireland, aims to strengthen the knowledge and skills of bivalve mollusc farmers at a European level, promoting an innovative training program based on marine environmental sustainability. #SustainableFarming #Shellfish #Aquaculture #ErasmusPlus #OPTIMA #MarineSustainability 🌍✨ MARE Soc.
