What does it take to get the national agency for sport, three sports governing bodies, universities and academic leaders, a national health service, a government and a concerned parent together? A topic as important as concussion in sport! Whilst organisations can lend a helping hand and provide much valued resources, it takes people to drive and innovate. Scotland has led for the past 9 years in developing one set of guidelines for all who are active and enjoy sport. If In Doubt Sit Them Out has now been adopted across the whole of the UK and with our Australian and Kiwi cousins. Today’s launch of the third iteration of the guidelines sees an improvement how we should recognise and remove anyone suspected of a concussion, how the brain of a child or an adult should be respected in the same way with rest, recuperation, rehabilitation and return to normal life and sport, how we should be more aware of the impact on women and girls as well as those of us who enjoy sport and live with a disability. Read about it, learn and tell others know about it. #IfInDoubtSitThemOut | The Scottish Sports Concussion Guidance has been updated, with key changes reflecting the latest research advances in sports concussion. The new guidance, published today, details the recommended stages in managing concussion in grassroots sports, from awareness of possible concussion symptoms through to the graduated return to sport. The team of experts behind the guidelines includes representatives from The Scottish Government, Scottish Rugby, Scottish Football Association, The University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, University of Stirling and the sportscotland institute of sport. Head of Sports Medicine at the sportscotland institute of sport, Dr Niall Elliott, said: “Our understanding of concussion continues to evolve. The latest guidance reflects the most recent advances in the area and is a significant landmark of the work being done in Scotland to raise awareness of the serious issue of concussion in sport.” Find out more: https://lnkd.in/e_d8Rpwv

New article on CJI (Clapham Junction/London/UK): 🎾 Major Development Alert: London's Deputy Mayor Approves Controversial Wimbledon Tennis Club Expansion The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has secured approval for its significant expansion plans, marking a crucial milestone in London's sporting infrastructure development. However, the project faces potential legal challenges ahead. Key Development Points: -8,000-seat stadium development -38 new grass courts -30,000 sq ft maintenance hub -9 km of new roads and paths While proponents argue this will secure Wimbledon's future as a premier Grand Slam venue, opponents including MPs and local groups raise concerns about public access rights and environmental impact. First-time candidate Austin Arthur, co-owner of a gymnastics center, is shaking up the political scene in Orange County by challenging incumbent District 1 Commissioner Nicole Wilson. With substantial backing from development interests, Arthur has raised over $200,000 and secured key endorsements. The hot-button issue? Rural growth controls. Wilson, an advocate for limiting urban sprawl, opposes development encroachments, while Arthur’s stance remains ambiguous but leans towards development flexibility. Wimbledon Embraces the Future: Line Judges to be Replaced by Automated Technology from 2025…🎾 From 2025, the iconic tournament will take a bold step forward by replacing all line judges with Live Electronic Line Calling. This decision marks a significant break from 147 years of tradition, aligning Wimbledon with the Australian Open and US Open, where automated systems are already in use. The Hawk-Eye technology, familiar to many players since its introduction on select courts in 2007, will now cover every inch of the grounds, including during qualifying at Roehampton. The decision followed extensive testing and consultation, with organisers confident that the technology is "sufficiently robust" to handle the demands of The Championships. While this shift represents a major leap in #innovation, it's important to acknowledge the longstanding contribution of line umpires, who have been integral to Wimbledon's history. The All England Club has expressed its gratitude for their dedication over the years. With this move, the French Open now stands as the last Grand Slam relying solely on human line judges. Will it follow suit soon? In another update, from next year, the singles finals will see a time shift, starting at 4pm, with the doubles finals kicking off the action at 1pm. As Wimbledon continues to balance tradition and #technology, one thing is certain: the game is always evolving. https://lnkd.in/eeQJrHVE #artificialintelligence #technology #business

Happy Friday! To celebrate we have our latest edition of Back Pages, where SAE Tom Symons talks about the potential impact of Prem games played abroad, and the media appetite to talk about it: "As the NFL’s International Series returns to London this month for its eighteenth year, the success and popularity of these annual fixtures in our capital city continue to grow - unique for a sport so deeply rooted in American culture. The UK’s media have shown keen interest, with outlets like the BBC, The Times, and the Daily Mail covering all things NFL London this week, as the game’s audience continues to expand on this side of the Atlantic, even catching the attention of Prince William. This raises the question of how the UK’s biggest sporting brand, the Premier League, would fare if competitive league fixtures were to take place in the U.S. or elsewhere abroad. The Premier League, as recently as July, reiterated that it has no plans to do so. However, with Spain’s La Liga planning overseas matches as early as the 2025-26 season, pressure for commercial expansion may begin to mount. As the 2021 Super League debacle proved — which, had it gone ahead, would have been to the huge detriment of the Premier League — English football fans don’t take kindly to breaking tradition in pursuit of financial gain. A Premier League ‘international series,’ similar to the NFL’s, would certainly stir controversy. However, the debate between commercial gain and cultural integrity is one the UK media would gladly sink their teeth into."

As discussed in Janelle Wells, Ph.D.'s class, there is a laundry list of issues currently troubling youth sports worldwide. The referee shortage might be at the top of the list. Reasons for the shortage include long hours and lack of adequate pay, but the main cause is the verbal and sometimes physical abuse referees receive on a game-by-game basis. This article discusses a proposed bill from a Minnesota state representative that would call for a $1,000 fine for any fan who interferes with a ref before, after, or during the game. While you could argue this may be a bit severe, it is undeniable that this issue needs to be addressed in some way. If this bill proposal gets the conversation going, that is a huge step in the right direction. #GlobalSports #GlobalWells https://lnkd.in/eNDY7SCv

A very powerful post about man's inhumanity towards man, and the power of courage!
The South–African government refused to give a visa to Black tennis player Arthur Ashe to play in the South African Open championships, effectively banning him from participating. The Minister of Sport Frank Waring unabashedly said that Ashe’s negative attitude towards South African apartheid was the primary reason for the ban, and quoted Ashe’s statement that his trip would be “an attempt to put a crack in the racist wall down there.” John Vorster, the South African Prime Minister, even flaunted his rejection of Ashe in hopes of reinforcing the status quo and helping his bid for reelection. Ashe responded by lobbying the governing bodies of tennis and testifying before a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee in Washington. “Athletes, especially black athletes, must use every resource at their command to right things that are wrong. … To have a potential to do a lot of good and not exercise this is the worst cowardice, especially in the United States,” he said. Although some protesters supported Ashe, few players publicly disagreed with his statements and tried to separate sports from politics. In 1973, Ashe was finally granted a visa for the South African Open, but he refused to play until seating for his matches was unsegregated. Ashe was the first black male to win Wimbledon. Although Ashe’s decisions faced considerable controversy, only one thing truly mattered to him: “Every day, [a young black teenager] was there when I arrived and he seemed to be there when I left. … He was watchful but shy as he shadowed me around the park. It was as if I exuded some precious, mysterious quality that he wanted to possess,” Ashe wrote in his memoirs. “Tell me something,” Ashe asked. “Why are you following me around?” The boy answered, “You are the first truly free black man I have ever seen.” Statements like these gave Ashe hope in his decision. Although one cannot hope to change the opinion of everyone, sometimes we only need to make a difference to one. #arthurashe
