The Group of Eight, which represents Australia’s powerhouse research intensive unis, that invest more than $3 billion annually in basic research – equivalent to approximately one-third of all basic research in Australia – urges the Government to legislate that a minimum of 65 percent of total ARC grant funding be allocated to basic research. The Go8 is broadly supportive of the measures in the Australian Research Council Amendment (Review Response) Bill 2023 as a timely strengthening of the operation and governance of the ARC and has provided five recommendations to the Senate Education and Employment Legislation Committee inquiry into the provisions of the Bill that aim to safeguard non-medical basic research in Australia through secure funding and improved governance.
