Blue Growth Consultant 🌊 | Connecting Blue Economy actors 🤝 | Promoting Innovation & Ocean 💡 | General Secretary of NOWA 🐟 | BlueTech Podcaster 🎙️
I'm thrilled to announce that the study I supported alongside my esteemed partners from STOA has been officially published! 📚✨ Our study, titled "Closing the Blue Loops: Responsible and Sustainable Innovation in the Fields of Water and Ocean," evaluates the need and scope for an EIT Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) focused on water, marine, and maritime areas (KIC WMM). This report identifies existing gaps in innovation ecosystems and recommends thematic focus areas with the highest potential for technological development, market deployment, and benefits for EU citizens. Some key elements of our study include: 🔍 Analysis of key stakeholders, public engagement methods, funding mechanisms, and legal and regulatory barriers. 🌐 Policy recommendations to foster innovation and market deployment in alignment with the European Green Deal and other EU strategies. 💡 Highlighting high-impact technologies for sustainability goals and identifying areas needing further research and regulatory changes. Personally, I contributed to the analysis (SWOT, Gap analysis, Survey) and explored the links between the three components of the triple helix of innovation: Research, Training, and Industries. My particular focus was on the industrial branch within the technological and socio-economic context of the water, marine, and maritime sectors. I’m eagerly looking forward to discovering the proposals from various EU partners to turn this KIC into a reality. These collaborations aim to establish Co-Location Centers and Innovation Hubs that will drive sustainable advancements in the global blue economy. 🌊💧🚀 Thank you to everyone involved in making this study possible, and I can't wait to see the positive impact it will have on our industry! 📖 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gVY_skGR Siri Granum Carson Richard Sempéré Pentti Kujala Sveinung Sægrov #Innovation #Sustainability #WMMKIC #BlueEconomy #STOA #EUInnovation

Every two years, the highly visible 'Science, Research and Innovation Performance of the EU' (SRIP) report is published by the European Commission's Directorate-General for #Research & #Innovation. The title of this year's report "A competitive Europe for a sustainable future" takes an in-depth look at the role of research and innovation in strengthening the #EU's #competitiveness while achieving the EU's ambitious long-term goals. I am very pleased that I was invited to contribute a chapter to this year's SRIP-report dedicated to the meaning of #technology #sovereignty at EU level outlining the conceptual underpinning of the concept and its link with open strategic autonomy and economic security, and current approaches adopted to determine the EU’s sovereignty position. One of my conclusions is that the EU must carefully align technology sovereignty with related concepts and utilize strategic intelligence and transparent decision-making to unite the diverse interests of the member states and work effectively towards the goal of EU technology sovereignty. I would like to invite everyone interested in the launch event of the report that takes place this *Thursday June 27 starting at 14:40* in Brussels (see link below for the exact address) or via Livestream. Alexandr Hobza (Chief Economist, DG Research & Innovation, European Commission) will present the key findings of the report, followed by a panel discussion with high-level experts. ℹ Registration is required to attend the launch event and can be done here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dM_GaUUt

Despite little change among leading and lagging countries in the latest European Innovation Scoreboard, Cyprus has made a remarkable leap from 15th place in 2017 to 10th in 2024, maintaining its 'strong innovator' status for the third consecutive year. What it takes? - 𝟯𝟵% 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 from 2017 to 2023, outpacing the EU average. - Transformation from a place with no universities into a research hub that is now home to 𝟭𝟮 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 and 𝟯,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀. - The island is on track to receive €𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 from 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲. - 𝟯,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗠𝗘𝘀 supported by a growing network of innovation hubs and venture capital. - Government initiatives such as the 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮 and a new €𝟮𝟳.𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 equity fund to attract international talent and support start-ups. Efforts to boost innovation in Europe’s Widening countries are clearly paying off, with 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 out of 15 nations seeing year-on-year 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀. Traditionally funded by the government and programs like Horizon, Cyprus faces challenges in spin-out policies and IP rights but is clearly on the path to becoming a leading innovation hub. Turn agreement into action! 📢CoARA Boost is launching its 1st Call for Cascade Funding, for institutions from across the ERA to implement #reform of #research #assessment!📢 Led within the EU-funded CoARA Boost project, the programme will be allocating 2.7M EUR to support a minimum of 50 organisations from across the European Research Area (ERA) – including non-members of CoARA – in tackling specific challenges related to reforming research assessment and implementing the Agreement commitments. The programme consists in two open calls: the first one running until 26 June 2024 and a second to be launched in December 2024. This first call for Cascade Funding will allocate up to 1.1M EUR to fund +20 projects facilitating knowledge-exchange, piloting new initiatives within institutions, and enabling lasting institutional change. As such, it encourages and supports research organisations to investigate and test what will efficiently work ‘in real life’. More specifically, the first call aims to: ✅ Facilitate the exchange, transfer and adaptation of proven good practices and their adoption in research organisations. ✅ Catalyse the set-up or transformation of research assessment practices and tools in line with the commitments of the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment. ✅ Support the development and testing of new and innovative research assessment approaches, models and procedures. As the call is meant to support institutions from across the European Research Area (ERA), eligible applications are limited to legal entities based in the EU Member States and countries associated to the Horizon Europe Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The types of organisations eligible for funding are detailed in the call text. By the end of the programme, it is expected to have a diverse portfolio of projects available that will translate the shared vision outlined in the Agreement into tangible, lasting institutional changes in research assessment. ➡ Details to be found: https://lnkd.in/ezrD_n3K 📅 Apply by 26 June 2024 #ReformingRA #researchassesment #institutionalchange
