“What these results show is that dog ownership can have a positive influence on children’s physical activity and that we start to see those benefits from early childhood” – Emma Adams, PhD Candidate. A first-of-its kind longitudinal study by Telethon Kids Institute and The University of Western Australia researchers has identified a clear link between homes with dogs and children’s physical activity levels. The three-year investigation followed 600 children aged two to seven. Those whose families acquired a dog during the study period saw a jump in children’s physical activity – particularly among girls. By contrast, children in families who lost a dog during the study saw a marked decline in physical activity. The study emphasises the potential for responsible dog ownership to promote healthy movement behaviors early in life – in turn contributing to children’s physical and mental health and reducing their long-term risk of chronic disease. Institute of Canine Psychotherapy, PhD Animal Cognition, Leadership (courses). Canine Psychotherapist (3 decades). U of Sedona (PhD - current) Author, Podcast Host. Psych. Today Mag, Roku TV, LA Times.
Kelsey came off a reserve, where, undoubtedly, she used many cognitive skills to stay alive, and thus uses these skills when homed. What does this mean? Well, it means she will continue to do behaviors that kept her alive. Wouldn't you? For example, when walking in an urban area on leash, she hesitates to cross busy streets at crosswalks. Why? Because walking in front of vehicles on roads is a good way to get yourself killed! Her adopter had tried using treats to get her to cross, which only exasperated the issue because she thinks her human has no idea what she is thinking or the importance of staying clear of vehicles. Once we worked together, we harnessed her ability to process, thus allowing her to learn, on her own, that cars stop and that they also remain on the road (she came from a reserve where often vehicles will drive on lawns and there are no sidewalks or defined roadways). Exercises in the home harnessed these processing skills, enhanced decision-making skills, and changed her perception of her human's ability to understand what she is thinking and feeling. We then applied these skills on walks, allowing her to choose, on her own, to cross the street in front of cars stopped at the crosswalk and not "freeze" when cars came up from behind us. By her fourth day in her new home, and her third walk, she was crossing streets and feeling much more comfortable. These exercises also created a bond between her and her adopter, and made integrating into home life smooth and stress-free. Your dog already knew how to sit. If your dog sits when asked, you’ve taught your dog the word “sit” is attached, placing her bottom on the ground. And kudos to you for providing feedback and communicating! It may seem like semantics. Yet, dog parents strengthen their relationships by understanding canine perspectives. Dogs and puppies enter our lives knowing behaviors and making associations with people, places, and things. They also act like dogs. As parents, we aim to teach them family norms—what’s acceptable at home and on outings. If your dog isn’t doing something when asked, think about their motivation. Are you asking them to leave friends or deer poop? Walking over and leashing your dog may be more intelligent than asking for something challenging. Dogs need to practice departing situations like children may. Establishing a cue when walking away—followed by a favorite snack or toy—may be required while practicing this skill. As a dog parent, consider how to make your requests successful for everyone. Take your dog’s perspective into account, and you’ll adjust your parenting style to create win-win situations for everyone. #dogbehavior #dogemotions #dogparents #doglatin

Introduction When considering adopting a puppy, one of the most common questions prospective dog owners ask is whether it's better to get a puppy at 8 weeks or 12 weeks. This decision is influenced by various factors, including breed characteristics, early training, and the emotional bond between the puppy and its mother. #12weeksoldpuppy #8weeksoldpuppy #Breedcharacteristics #Earlypuppytraining #GetaPuppyat8Weeksor12Weeks #Idealageforpuppyadoption #Puppyadoptionage #PuppyBehavior #Puppycare #PuppyDevelopment #Puppygrowth #Puppyreadiness #Puppyseparation #puppysocialization #puppytemperament #Puppymotherbond

Whoa! What's that?? 👀 Our Early Socialization project breaks activities up into categories aimed at building foundational skills that your pups will need to succeed in their working life. Through various environmental enrichment practices, you can introduce your pups to: 👣 Surfaces: Working dogs need to be comfortable walking over different types of surfaces such as grates and uneven pavements. 🚦 Sounds: With so many different noises in the world, it is critical that our puppies are exposed to age-appropriate sounds and noises to prepare them to be confident and to quickly recover from sudden and loud noises. 🚗 Motion: Occasionally, working dogs come across surfaces that move such as a loose floorboards or riding an escalator. 🎎 Novel Objects are objects that puppies have never seen before and are new to them. Working dogs often come across unusual looking objects and need to be able to be comfortable working around new objects. Children’s Cuddles and Dogs’ Freedom of Choice. 🐶🤗 A study released on December 14, 2023, by researchers from The University of Salford and funded by Dogs Trust considers the dynamics of child-dog interactions and the importance of a dog’s freedom of choice when it comes to physical affection such as cuddling. In the paper published in the CABI Human-Animal Interactions Journal, the team led by PhD candidate Anna Baatz conducted family interviews to analyze the implications of children between the ages of 7 and 12 engaging with family dogs. This research addresses a rise in dog bites within the home and seeks to enhance safe interactions between children and dogs. Researchers discovered that while family dogs may display positive behaviors when they initiate or consent to cuddles, they can react “negatively” (defensively)—through growling, snapping, or showing other signs of distress—when cuddles are forced upon them without their choice. This suggests that, although cuddling with pets is a source of joy for many humans, children must learn that dogs should have the autonomy to engage or withdraw from such interactions. The study’s findings emphasize that the answer is nuanced and dependent on whether dogs are given the choice to participate in the interaction. This research underscores the necessity for families to understand and recognize canine body language and consent, ensuring that children know to invite dogs for cuddles rather than imposing them, which ultimately promotes safer and more enjoyable interactions for both parties.
