Celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth 𝐘𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰. As we celebrate Black History month, it reminds us to pause and recognize the many contributions Black Americans have had on our stories. It is especially important to note the ties between credit unions and Black History. As a financial cooperative, we’re using this month to celebrate and share the history and culture of Black Americans in the world of finance. February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements of Black communities and honor the significant role and impact they have made on all facets of life and society throughout history. As we celebrate Black History Month, let us recognize the diversity of talent and strength within our communities, acknowledging the profound impact that African Americans have made and continue to make in every facet of our society. As we celebrate Black History Month, we must also acknowledge the challenges and gaps faced by black communities particularly in access to education. As we celebrate Black History Month, it is crucial to reflect not only on the achievements and resilience of the Black community but also on the historical injustices that have shaped the United States and Maine. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need for land acknowledgments, recognizing the Indigenous peoples on whose land we stand. It is equally important to extend these acknowledgments to encompass the labor that built this nation, often extracted from enslaved African people. On the first day of Black History Month, 2024, we are exploring the significance of including labor acknowledgments alongside land acknowledgments and sharing some best practices to ensure a respectful and inclusive approach. https://lnkd.in/epnnkUE3

Black History is American History

The Research Institute joins the nation in celebrating Black History Month! Heritage months are a time when we as a team renew our commitment to year-round equity research that helps ensure educational access and positive outcomes for all students. The postsecondary attainment rate of the Black population in Dallas County has increased at every degree level, every year since 2014 (through most recent PUMS data), with nearly a 6-percentage-point increase from 2014 to 2021. Higher attainment means higher wages, so the Research Institute continues to examine the unique factors that can maximize intra-group attainment rates--and therefore opportunity and mobility--for our Black community members.
