🌍 Today is World Environment Day! 🚨According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world's population and threatening about half of global GDP ($44 trillion). The number and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000: without urgent action, droughts could affect more than three-quarters of the world's population by 2050. 🛰️This is where #spacetech comes to action: Space-based technologies, such as remotely sensed data, have enhanced scientific understanding of water cycles, air quality, forests and other aspects of the natural environment. These surveying and monitoring tools provide valuable information on the state of ecosystems, which offers objective support for positive environmental action, including conservation and sustainable resource management. 💦 With our INNO4CFIs Project, we are leveraging cutting-edge technologies and nature-based solutions to promote sustainable environmental practices, with a focus on carbon farming, reforestation, and agroforestry systems to increase CO2 uptake while nurturing vital environmental benefits like freshwater production, soil restoration and biodiversity enhancement starting with planting 6000 trees in Europe. Discover the #greenrevolution👇🏽 INNO4CFIs is a project co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the innovative #I3 instrument and coordinated by Fondazione E. Amaldi. Our 2024 ClimateTech Index found that the 1,000 best funded UK ClimateTechs are worth £26bn, which is a superb success - but startups across the sector face challenges and the climate crisis demands us to go further, faster. So what do we plan to do next? We've got 5 priorities this year: 📈 Carbon Markets - through our Carbon Markets Innovation Forum we will pushing for Government action to create a high quality, high integrity voluntary carbon market that (where appropriate) intersects with the compliance market. 🍔 Feeding the Future - a campaign to put technology at the centre of food security and sustainability policy for this (and the next) government. This means cutting edge novel production and empowering farmers to increase sustainability whilst securing production. 🏘 Built Different - a campaign to accelerate the decarbonisation of construction and the built environment through the use of tech, and reform of EPCs to incentivise truly sustainable behaviours. 💰 For FOAK's Sake - a campaign to produce policy solutions to the late-stage valley of death funding gap that our ClimateTech Index showed so starkly. This means investigating the role of policy in supporting first-of-a-kind (FOAK) demonstrators to increase the number of ClimateTech scaleups in the UK. 🗳 A ClimateTech Manifesto - ahead of this year's General Election we want to convene the ClimateTech ecosystem to lay out a plan for the next government, in partnership with our friends at techUK, Tech Nation, Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation, and Cleantech for UK. We're after partners for all of the above, drop me a line if you'd like to get involved.

"The green premium is the cost difference between a cheaper product that increases pollution and a more expensive alternative that offers climate benefits. In order to get people on board with new technologies, we need to close that gap." Many of HG Ventures' portfolio companies are working to narrow the grren premium in their respective industries, and we are excited about their breakthroughs becoming more mainstream. In this article for MIT Technology Review, Casey Crownhart examines the green premium and the imperative to reduce or eliminate it (behind a paywall). https://lnkd.in/gA343b5e

The key message from #ClimateWeekNYC was clear: we need to move faster and smarter. So, what's standing in our way? For the hard-to-abate sectors pushing to bridge the gap between innovation and commercialisation, several critical barriers are stalling progress: 1️⃣ Financing Gaps: The dreaded "Valley of Death" is very real for first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects. High costs and perceived risks make it tough for these technologies to secure early-stage investment. Investors are hesitant due to complex scaling needs and delayed returns. Is there an opportunity for the large (energy) players to co-ordinate their efforts in FOAK and pool risk? Yes. 2️⃣ The Offtake Conundrum: Offtake agreements are necessary to secure financing, but financing is necessary to secure these agreements! This stalemate is blocking final investment decisions in the transformative capital intensive projects, slowing our pathway to lower carbon world. We need early believers willing to back these ventures and pave the way. Less 'fast followers', more 'first movers'. 3️⃣ Regulatory Uncertainty: Evolving regulations — especially in emerging sectors like green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) — are adding another layer of risk, making decision-makers hesitant. Clearer policy signals could unlock stalled investments and accelerate deployment. Many of these challenges boil down to a data gap. There’s uncertainty around how different technologies will evolve and what their true impact will be. That’s why Atoma Research is on a mission to provide the data and insights needed to de-risk investments and drive capital to the most impactful climate tech solutions. 💡 Ready to go from 'first-of-a-kind' to 'next-of-a-kind'? Reach out to see how we can help your institution confidently navigate the future of climate tech.
