In the movie surrounding the life of the two sons of a coal miner living in West Virginia, October Sky, we follow the story of how education can help children escape generations of working low paying jobs that don’t satisfy their life goals. In this film, one son of coal miner John Hickham develops a deep interest in rockets and satellites after seeing Sputnik 1 fly across the night sky. Growing up in an underprivileged family and living in a generational cycle of low level education and low paying jobs, the son, Jim, doesn’t believe he can pursue his interest, his dad reinforcing that idea by showing disapproval of his son’s new mania. Over the course of the story, Homer learns to accept his own dreams and chase them no matter what other people tell him. His weapon of choice to battle the negative thoughts and comments from others is education. One of his teachers helps him fight to learn more about rockets and chase his dream of working with them, which he eventually achieves after finding a job at NASA by the end of the movie and working on a space shuttle that gets launched. Here at Instilt we are aware that the strongest weapon to fight inequality and escape generational cycles of unfulfilled dreams and unsatisfying jobs is education. New funding: Space For All – £50,000-£100,000 for student, young people and STEM engagement, closes October 27. The UK Space Agency is making a total of £500,000 available for student and young people engagement and inspiration under its Space for All Fund for 2023–2025. The aim is to: -Develop new ways to reach young people from all backgrounds, that are modern and relevant to the technologies they are accustomed to, their values and social environments; -Encourage young people to pursue STEM education by using the exciting and inspiring context of space; -Increase the prevalence of regular, long-standing interventions and projects in the UK that will make a lasting impact on the choices of young people; -Inspire, support, engage and encourage students throughout their academic and social journeys into the world of work; -Sustain students through periods where they may otherwise be unsupported and lose focus and interest in STEM. This event will feature youth from around the world who are working on areas in education, human rights, equity, climate change, democracy, and much more. Is the event only one day?  At the moment we are planning for one long day on 9/27/24, we will consider adding another day depending on the amount of presentations and interest. Can our students get "credit" for participating/presenting?  We leave that up to each individual program to decide on how participating and or presenting works for them. You can contact us for ideas.
