🏡 In 2023, the housing crisis has become an undeniable reality, touching every corner of society. The struggle is real, with demand far exceeding the available supply. Bold decisions and courageous policies are needed to address this issue at its core. Homelessness is not a choice; it's an unintended consequence of a system we've constructed. But if we built it once, we can rebuild it, placing the concept of shelter as a fundamental human right at its heart. ❤️ Here at the Foundation, we are unwavering in our commitment to ensuring that every young Australian has a safe and secure place to sleep. It's a mission that demands collective action. Each of us can contribute, raising our voices to advocate for shelter as a right. As we start the new year, let's aim to provide shelter for the 44,000 young people who go to sleep every night without a safe haven. 🌟 Your support matters. Join with us at the Property Industry Foundation and play your part. Together, let's rewrite the narrative, making shelter a universal right for all in 2024. #HousingForAll #EndHomelessness #ShelterAsARight 🌈 Find out how to get involved << https://bit.ly/3NBfdpV

📈 Nearly 139,000 children are living in temporary accommodation, according to the latest homelessness statistics released by the government. This figure is up 14% on last year. As the number of families with dependent children in need of emergency housing rapidly grows, the standards within emergency accommodation must be urgently adapted to provide a safe and secure living environment for children and families. To help local authorities improve the conditions for families, Morris+Company's new report, funded by Commonweal, provides spatial guidance & design standards associated with family emergency accommodation. The report also calls for a new, more specific definition of emergency accommodation to denote places where people are housed for 56 days while local authorities carry out a duty of care assessment. I hear it so often... that there is no housing because of those from "other countries coming over and taking all the housing". Those from other countries are not "taking the housing". There is not enough housing full stop. In actual fact, my experience is those that flee their country due to war, violence, persecution would love to "return to their home country" to be with their support networks, families and safe. Most did not plan to have to leave all they have ever known to find a safe haven, a.k.a some temporary accommodation, where they are then given leave to remain and told to leave the accommodation in 28 days and be street homeless. The fact homelessness is rising is not a surprise; the cost of living, section 21 no fault evictions, not to mention the asylum process. Government policy fighting against the government target to end homelessness at its finest! 🙄 Policy must consider cross departmental impact if any policy is to be successful. https://lnkd.in/edHX-Kin

About a third of those who seek help from homelessness services report experiencing domestic violence, while half of those who need emergency or temporary accommodation cannot access it. We need the NSW Government to invest $30 million over the next three years in providing safe, stable and accessible temporary accommodation that helps people get out of homelessness and into homes – something everyone deserves. Download our Pre-Budget Submission to the NSW Government to see the five key investments we're recommending they make that are achievable and pragmatic, yet also highly impactful in the short-term. https://bit.ly/3xFJzT5

Homelessness Humanitarian I Australian of the Year Finalist 2022 I Australian of the Year nominee 2024 I Founder of the “OG” Beddown
If like me you feel saddened, angry and frustrated seeing our people suffer and die through the current homelessness disaster unfolding across Australia then we need to come together and unite in solidarity through visible activism & advocacy on mass and as a collective together to show we want change from our governments. My vision and purpose has always been to activate empty and under-utilised spaces and provide shelter first principles that look to change and save the lives of the homeless - I have never deviated from this and I am still committed to that even though I am no longer associated with Beddown (FYI - there are still many people that think I am still with Beddown, just for the record, I am not). Having empty spaces and places like Pinkenba, Wellcamp and others as examples that could have an immediate impact to the lives of many yet homelessness still grows, people in tents, in cars, on the street, sofa surfing etc. and not to mention the loss of life. We need change and funding for the sector to enable them to activate and operate spaces as we can do in times of natural disasters and to give people the basic human rights whilst an adequate housing stock is created. We need to do better, we need to do more for our people. Who feels the same way as I do and who wants change? #activism #advocacy #homelessness #disaster #crisis #peopledying #shelterfirst #nooneleftoutside Image credit: Reddit / Paul Slater
