We simply must break with traditional approaches to homelessness. We need to embrace imperfect shelter solutions to help people now and iterate them quickly to make improvements. Relying solely on building homes as the solution does not help the here and now neither does short term placement in hotels or motels. The issue grows and swells by the day, homes are not growing by the day to accommodate people. It is also obvious to me that hotels and motels are not working either - as we wouldn't have a problem if everyone was also in a hotel / motel room! Governments want to have "perfect" solutions, however until homes are built to accommodate our people we need a change and a shift in thinking as well as changing their view of risk. Leveraging our country's disaster management protocols and process with the funding to help the homelessness sector help our people now, it simply needs to happen across the country. We need the traditional approaches and non-traditional / imperfect solutions working together. We need to get our people into shelter first - we need to be looking at this issue so that no one is left outside. The simple and brutal reality of this - people are dying, people are struggling to survive and exist. We need to do better. We can do better. Today I had the opportunity to return on The Social to talk about homelessness, this time with a focus on winter. There were only a few minutes to cover a lot of ground, and so of course, it was not enough time. there was lots to say: busses as shelters, “fire safety”, encampment evictions, and discussing not being able to donate our way out of a crisis. i am glad i got to name the ridiculous removal of a bus shelter in the name of safety and the need to divest from cops, AND gosh, instead of trying to hide homelessness from our kids, teach compassion - but there were three key things I did not get to mention: 1. We need to centre the voices of people who are unhoused, with lived experiences. They need to be part of these media conversations, policy decisions. yes, this segment did not have that, i know. 2. We don’t need just winter plan; we need a year-round emergency water response plan: heat, smog, fog, storms... the climate crisis disproportionately affects people who are poor and unhoused 3. We need to repeatedly ask better questions: instead of villainizing individuals, critique the system, and mobilize for change. “we cannot donate our way out of this crisis… we need to pair it with political action… we need to create not more food banks, but a reality where people don’t rely on food banks; one where people have access to what they need” https://lnkd.in/gYDC9vyn

In case you missed it, last week SBS World News ran a story on #YouthFoyers. Homelessness Australia’s Kate Colvin says: “When young people flee a violent home or end up in a situation where they’re homeless, sticking with education can be really difficult because they don’t have the family supports that other young people have.” That’s why we’re working with a consortium of 15+ organisations to call for investment in an additional 10, forty-unit Youth Foyers nationally, which provide young people with housing plus education, employment and life skills supports - all under one roof. By  Brianna Lee  and Nick Gerda SITUATION: It was a big and bold promise by Karen Bass as she campaigned to be L.A’.s next mayor: get 17,000 unhoused Angelenos into housing during her first year in office. The homelessness crisis plays out daily on city streets — confronting residents, business owners and visitors with the visible failure of public policy to keep people sheltered and safe. And this crisis is top of mind for the people who live and work here. When LAist asked Angelenos what issues most urgently needed Mayor Bass’ attention, 63% of respondents said homelessness and a third listed it as their biggest personal stressor. Homelessness came up so often across our survey that it seems clear that making progress on reducing homelessness could make or break the new mayor’s first term. Homelessness includes rough sleeping, sofa surfing, temporary accommodation, sleeping in a car - not just on the streets. 2. ALL homeless people have a story and are homeless for many, many reasons including relationship breakups and no-fault evictions. 3. Let’s delve into what it means for those without stable housing: 👉Warmer Weather As temperatures rise, the harshness of winter subsides. For those living on the streets, this means less exposure to extreme cold, but it doesn’t eliminate their struggles. 👉Attention Shift Spring often shifts public attention away from homelessness. While people enjoy the season, the plight of the homeless can be overlooked. Advocacy and support may wane. 👉Continued Struggle Homelessness persists regardless of the season. Even with milder weather, basic needs like food, hygiene, and safety remain unmet for many. 👉Budget Challenges: The Spring Budget announcements can impact homelessness services. Unfortunately, recent budgets have fallen short in providing long-term solutions. While there are some positive changes, critical issues like housing affordability and benefit freezes persist. Remember, homelessness isn’t just about rough sleeping; it includes those in temporary accommodation, couch surfers, and others facing housing instability.
