📢 Towards Halal Standards for Cultured Meat: JAKIM’s Role in Sharia-Compliant Modern Food Solutions On September 24-25, 2024, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) participated in an international symposium titled ‘Sharia Rulings on Consuming and Marketing Cultured Meat, Insects, and GMFs of Animal Origins’ held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Jeddah. Organized by the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA), the symposium aimed to examine contemporary issues in modern food and provide Islamic legal guidance for the Muslim community. JAKIM's delegation was honored to share Malaysia’s experience in researching halal guidelines for cultured meat. This is an important step to ensure that cultured meat production technology, which uses animal cells as the primary source, aligns with Sharia principles. JAKIM’s participation in this symposium further strengthens Malaysia’s commitment to implementing halal compliance in high-tech food innovations like cultured meat. IIFA, as an organization under the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), plays a critical role in formulating fatwas and halal guidelines for scientifically produced food products. Discussions and resolutions from IIFA are important for Malaysia and JAKIM, especially for the purpose of studying the determination of fatwas and also in the aspect of halal certification. The IIFA resolution through this symposium will be submitted to the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs of Malaysia (MKI) for further discussion.
