Happy #GivingTuesday ! Please consider celebrating this year by donating to PSU’s Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA). This GivingTuesday, we are aiming to be able to develop internally by raising funds to create more opportunities for GPSA to support graduate students. We currently do not receive enough funds to be able to fully support the requests of student groups coming to us for co-sponsorship. We are working to expand our ability to offer integrated salaried positions to enable our student members to be supported for all of the work that they do. We have started work toward an initiative to train students to work as medical and legal interpreters for our legal, medical, and psychological clinics. Our long-term goal is to start being able to offer a childcare grant for graduate, professional, and medical students who are traveling for their research. We also want to create a Penn State Grad School publication, where we would be able to present the work of our students. GPSA is the longest-running student governing body here at Penn State, established 73 years ago. When you give to GPSA, your tax-deductible donation will go to support events that develop bonds and promote networking within the graduate and professional student communities. In our latest episode of Future U, we had an insightful discussion on the role and future of legacy admissions in higher education. Legacy admissions has come under scrutiny recently due in part to the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action. But there are reasons universities like legacy admissions. One of the arguments supporting legacy admissions is that the practice could theoretically support low-income students by fostering loyalty and boosting fundraising, thus potentially contributing more financial aid for those in need. Proponents further claim that the presence of legacy students could bring certain advantages to an institution in that it fosters a uniform culture and connects students across generations. But there are new studies like the one from Raj Chetty that claim legacy admissions overly helps wealthy, White applicants. And, there are examples like Johns Hopkins, which ceased legacy admissions without seeing a drop in donations. This is a complex issue with no easy answers. But, as Jeff Selingo points out in the episode, schools are most likely not going to get rid of it without intervention from state or federal government. This is a conversation worth having as we strive for greater equity in education. Happy Times Linkediners, This past summer I had the privilege of joining Phoenix Charter Academy in Chelsea and I can’t express in full detail the great work this school has been doing since it was opened in 2006. As I see it, this school is about hope, inclusion, empowerment, global citizenship, social cohesion, common good, the eradication of suffering, exclusion, and loss. The school’s outcomes and impacts speak volumes. The school has been creating a soft but “radical” change through making secondary school education accessible. Not only this, but also the transition to either economically empowering jobs right after graduation, or to the pursuit of higher education in universities—for which Massachusetts has a universal renown— such as Brandeis, Northeastern, BU, or Bunker Hill. The school serves as a welcoming warm nest for new newcomers who, or whose parents, believe deeply in the American Dream and values. Being new to the USA, in general, and to Chelsea climate, in particular, makes these students and their families undergo a tsunami of challenges that only financial and social/emotional care can address, especially as the cold season is approaching rapidly.
