Great talking to people at CNTW's Service User and Carer Group this morning, about accessibility for visually impaired people. It's always good to be asked to share lived experience about challenges and potential solutions. But this needs to be turned into action if it is to be meaningful and a genuine learning. Having vented my spleen somewhat, I left the group with 3 top asks: 1. Use the tools and guidance already available (Accessibility Checker, Accessible Information Standard, Reasonable Adjustments Flag etc) 2. Speak to VI groups in your area and see how they might be able to help you. 3. Talk to your VI staff and patients - listen to what they say, no, really listen, and take action. I stressed the point that none of this is that difficult to achieve - it's about having an open mindset and a commitment to inclusion. The tools and systems are there, we just need organisations and individuals to commit to using them, to be anti-ableist. #Accessibility#DisabilityInclusion

What is an ‘Expert by Experience?’ It is an individual who has lived experience, and in my case, lives with a disability. It is a person who has first-hand knowledge to contribute to discussions, policies and practices related to disability issues. An expert offers valuable insights based on their personal experiences, helping to shape more effective, empathetic and inclusive approaches and services. Their expertise is not derived from academic study or professional training alone, but from practical day-to-day challenges and realities of living with a disability. This perspective is crucial for developing more accurate and responsive services and ensures that the voices of those directly affected by disability are heard. Read my personal story at the link below and consider whether you ensure ‘Experts by Experience’ are included in your work. https://lnkd.in/gwR6-6Ji

Breaking barriers and embracing freedom at IDEM!🌟✨ One of our people had an amazing night at the River of Light last week, but this is more than going to see some lights… After having his tea, he asked, “Is it too late to go out?” At IDEM, we follow a person-centred approach, which means that our people should never have to ask this. We want our people to live exactly how they want to and not depend on excuses like it being dark, needing to go to bed early or their support worker’s shift time! 🔗Open Future Learning has a hysterical collaboration with the Stay Up Late campaign, breaking down the worst responses from support providers on why the people they care for can’t go out late at night. You can watch it here: https://lnkd.in/eQ8RRsak Let’s push for a world where adults with additional needs can enjoy their freedom to go out whenever they want. 🕊️🌈 #IDEMLiving #EmbracingFreedom #PersonCentredApproach #OpenFutureLearning #StayUpLate #BreakingBarriers
