Great to see new companies like Elysian working on battery electric aviation (BEA) for flights up to 800km. Powertrain efficiency is the name of the game as well as the elimination of the non-GHG climate impacts of aviation caused by fuel combustion as recently studied by CE Delft: https://lnkd.in/grQffH-8 Like BEVs also BEA will benefit from increasingly decarbonized electricity based on the growing renewable power generation as well as the progress in battery technology. To me a text book example of future proof innovation 😊 I wish the Elysian team good luck with the development and commercialization of their battery electric plane! #aviation #electrification #powertrain #efficiency #eugreendeal #batterytechnology #emissionreduction #climatechangemitigation

We are happy to announce that the Alliance for Zero-Emission Aviation (#AZEA) – of which #Bologna #airport is member - has just launched its #vision on enabling the operation of #hydrogen-powered and #electric flights in Europe. The establishment of this common vision demonstrates the capacity of the Alliance members to work together and their commitment to make the energy shift towards electricity and hydrogen a reality in aviation. The report sets the ambitious objective to have 36 to 68% of intra-EU flights operated by these new aircraft configurations by 2050 and describes how they would progressively penetrate the market. It identifies barriers and challenges to be addressed through coherent actions by the members of the ecosystem, related to aircraft production and certification, aerodromes, airspace, regulation and standardisation. It confirms the capacity of aircraft powered with electric or hydrogen to reduce aviation CO2 emissions on intra-EU routes by up to 30% in 2050. AZEA is a voluntary initiative of private and public partners launched by the European Commission and supported by EUROCONTROL who share the objective to prepare the entry into commercial service of hydrogen-powered and electric aircraft. How Are Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft Revolutionizing #ZeroEmissionAviation? Hydrogen-powered aircraft represent a promising leap towards zero-emission aviation. By using hydrogen as fuel, these planes—whether through combustion or fuel cells—produce only heat and water, thus eliminating #greenhouse gas emissions. With ongoing research addressing #hydrogenstorage, safety, and costs, the aviation sector is poised to embrace this clean energy solution for a sustainable future. Key Market Players: GKN Aerospace, AeroDelft, Pipistrel Aircraft, Thales, Alakai Technologies Corporation, HES ENERGY SYSTEMS PRIVATE LIMITED, Urban Aeronautics, ZeroAvia., AeroVironment.,Airbus Want To Know More: https://lnkd.in/dYzzryCu #HydrogenAircraft #ZeroEmissionAviation #CleanEnergy #SustainableFlight #AviationInnovation #FuelCellTechnology #GreenAviation #ClimateAction #HydrogenFuel #FutureOfFlight

Australian #hydrogen-electric aircraft developer AMSL Aero is taking a long-range view of potential use cases for its in-development Vertiia aircraft, targeting intra-city operations rather than urban air taxi services. That is according to company chair Chris Smallhorn who tells FlightGlobal during the Singapore air show that Vertiia’s range and endurance will ultimately set it apart from a crowded electric vertical take-off and landing (#eVTOL) market. “Why emphasise range and endurance? Australia’s big,” he says. ”If we could only move around that 150km range, the reality in Australia is that you are locked into city operations. We will be pursuing particularly the regional and emergency medical services at the beginning.” An early prototype of AMSL proposed hydrogen-electric Vertiia vehicle has completed an initial flight-test programme Co-founded by chief engineer Andrew Moore and chief operating office Siobhan Lyndon about six years ago, AMSL is led by chief executive Max York The company is headquartered in the Sydney suburb of Bankstown. The start-up’s proposed Vertiia aircraft will have a maximum range of 540nm (1,000km) and a payload of 500kg (1,100lb). ”That brings you to a very comfortable four passengers, or for EMS a stretcher and two medics, plus medical equipment,” Smallhorn says. Smallhorn says the company “almost certainly” will pursue a propulsion system based on liquid hydrogen, rather than gas. “It was just a matter of whether the ecosystem was developing at the rate that we are developing.” #sustainableaviation #lh2 #liquidhydrogen #evtol #singaporeairshow

#aircraft #airlines #hydrogen #sustainability #innovation #engineering Fantastic news… British regional airline Loganair is aiming to launch the world’s first zero emissions passenger air service using a hydrogen-electric Britten-Norman Islander plane. Loganair announced on January 30, 2024, that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cranfield Aerospace Solutions (CAeS) to enter an enhanced level of collaboration. “This strategic alliance encompasses operational requirements and design, standards and regulations, infrastructure development, and stakeholder engagement,” Cranfield Aerospace Solutions said. Cranfield Aerospace Solutions is the expert team behind Project Fresson and its hydrogen-powered aircraft demonstrator. The plan is to introduce the hydrogen-electric Britten-Norman Islander aircraft into operational service at Kirkwall Airport (KOI) and the Orkney region by 2027. “The short haul routes we operate in Orkney and the challenging weather conditions we face, make the ideal test bed for hydrogen-electric aircraft, and we are incredibly proud that we could be offering the world’s first commercial zero emissions flights,” Peter Simpson, Executive Chairman of Loganair, said. https://lnkd.in/dFeMGM2z
