As carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is being pushed back up the hype cycle by the usual suspects, I'm dusting off years-old pieces on the subject. Nothing has changed. This piece is about ExxonMobil's shell game claims to deep virtue with CCS. Full article: https://lnkd.in/gJwGKAEt The narrative around ExxonMobil's engagement in CCS, portraying itself as a leader in carbon capture, exemplifies the disconnect between corporate claims and reality. ExxonMobil boasts about capturing 7 million tonnes of CO2 annually, positioning itself as a frontrunner in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. However, when these figures are put into the context of the global CO2 problem—measuring in the range of thousands of billions of tonnes—the impact is negligible, barely scratching the surface of the issue. Further analysis reveals that much of the carbon supposedly sequestered by ExxonMobil and similar endeavors is tied to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, which ultimately contribute to further CO2 emissions. This practice, where CO2 is injected into depleted oil fields to extract more oil, contradicts the fundamental goal of CCS—resulting in a net increase in carbon emissions when the extracted oil is eventually burned. Additionally, the claim of significant carbon capture by ExxonMobil falls apart upon closer examination of their Shute Creek operations, which involve extracting already geologically sequestered CO2 with natural gas, stripping the CO2 off, piping it tens of miles away and pumping it back underground in tapped out oil wells for enhanced oil recovery. And when there's no EOR to perform, they just dump the excess CO2 into the atmosphere. ExxonMobil’s CCS claims are actually a shell game with the world as the marks. #oilandgasindustry #carboncapture #climateaction

ExxonMobil is proposing a Solent region #CO2 pipeline to transport "millions of tonnes" of annually captured #carbon from its Fawley Petrochemical Complex refinery near Southampton, #England to the only #carbon storage site under the English Channel. The captured, transported and stored carbon will be equivalent to removing the #emissions of five million cars from the roads each year. We did not see any pushback on whether climate change was real at this year’s CERA event: perhaps there is now too much physical evidence. However, we did see more pushback on pathways and meeting deadlines. Apart from geopolitics, which are hard to avoid, the two central concerns are costs (who pays for energy transition) and whether all this is irrelevant if we cannot get permits to make the investments needed. The growth in energy demand is causing challenges and it is something underestimated in earlier net-zero pathway plans. Discussions focused the energy demand growth on electrical power – heavily impacted by AI. https://hubs.ly/Q02qwhW50 Commodities mentioned: #Carbon, #Hydrogen, #LNG/ #NaturalGas, #CrudeOil, #Polymers, #Ammonia, #Alkylate, #Fertilizer, #SAF, #Propylene, #Ethylene, #Polypropylene, #Polyethylene Companies mentioned: Oxy ExxonMobil Chevron PETRONAS aramco AkzoNobel Dow Microsoft Issaquena Green Power Hess Corporation Next Wave Braskem Petrobras Siemens Energy Cummins Inc. thyssenkrupp nucera SLB Bloom Energy TotalEnergies Plug Power #chemicalindustry #plasticsindustry #plasticpackaging #chemicals #petrochemicals #sustainability #cleanenergy #oilandgasindustry #packaging #esginvesting #ESG #energy #manufacturing #materials #energytransition

ExxonMobil has announced that they have been able to execute the largest offshore carbon dioxide storage lease within the U.S. They have done this with the Texas General Land Office (GLO). The specific site is more than 271,000 acres and it aligns with the onshore CO2 storage portfolio which ExxonMobil is currently developing. Furthermore, the site highlights the U.S. Gulf Coast as a leader when it comes to carbon capture and storage (CCS). The article below portrays a new development which has recently occurred for ExxonMobil. All the parties that are involved in this project will benefit, as will the carbon industry and the environment. The ICS Barometer Report for 2023–2024, launched last month, is the latest full scale annual survey of risk and confidence among maritime leaders. The report features a special focus on: Fuels, Emissions, and Decarbonisation. Fuel remains an integral part of shipping’s decarbonisation equation and while the broad expectation is for a multi-fuel future, the industry perception of individual technologies has changed significantly over the past two years In the chart 📊 below you will see shipowners and ship operators' perception of the fuels and technologies that will be most viable in the next decade. The continued strength of LNG, biofuel, and HFO with abatement technology in leaders’ forecasts for the next decade demonstrate the power of the familiar in an uncertain time for the shipping industry. Although, each is seen as less viable than it was in the 2022-23 ICS Barometer Report. Well said Jan! Two important substituted fuels ( Tide and wind) may add value in sea passage navigation (part-time). it will save the use of fuel. It is absolutely true that ancient mariners utilized tide and wind to travel one continent to another. It is high time to consider in the process of decarbonization and alternatives of marine fuel.
