What impact does mining have towards a sustainable future? Mining is something that is not very top of mind for me in my typical day-to-day, despite the privileges and comforts metals provide (e.g. my iPhone). So not only was this event extremely insightful and thought provoking, it was a good reminder! Thank you to Kookai Chaimahawong and the Centre for Climate and Business Solutions (CCBS) for enabling some profound ideas and discussions to take place. 👏👏👏 A couple insights from the speakers that resonated with me: 💡 Mining minerals and metals is key to the clean energy transition and enabling innovations, but current climate change realities are making mining harder to do and might contribute to more emissions. For example, water scarcity in mining communities causes a new constraint. And the only option is to desalinate ocean water and pump it in, which is energy intensive. Water problems are becoming energy problems. 💡To improve the future of mining, we need more generalists - people who go beyond specialized, technical skills in mining engineering to become more involved in operations and policy. With more who are willing to take the generalist path, we can get more broad-scale thinking and questioning needed for a more sustainable future.

🆕 New Report: 'The Climate Myth of Deep Sea Mining.' 🌐 🌊Mining companies claim that mining polymetallic nodules could be a low-carbon alternative to mining on land. MINING WASTE 🔎 Did you know that Geoscience Australia's Atlas of Mine Waste identifies 1,050 sites as possible sources of critical minerals? Australia’s 2022 National Waste Report showed that the country’s mining sector generated 620 megatons of waste in 2020-2021. While today it may be viewed as a liability, mining waste presents a major opportunity, containing significant concentrations of highly sought-after critical metals including cobalt, vanadium, gallium, germanium, tantalum, indium, and rare earth elements. By adopting a circular economy approach to recover and circulate materials, today's "waste" could become tomorrow's resources; supplementing future critical minerals demand while reducing the environmental impacts of the resources sector.
