Virgin Atlantic has operated a transatlantic flight using 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel from London Heathrow to New York JFK, the first time the trip has been made using a pure blend of the fossil fuel alternative. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) currently represents less than 0.1% of global jet fuel volumes and fuel standards allow for just a 50% SAF blend in commercial jet engines. However, many aviation insiders believe that SAF will play a significant role in the decarbonization of long-haul aviation, and the pathway to Net Zero 2050. The fuel when made from waste products, can deliver CO2 lifecycle emissions savings of up to 70%, whilst performing like the traditional jet fuel it replace Click below to read the full article #sustainability; #sustainableaviationfuel; #saf; #aerospace; #aviation

Almost one week ago that Virgin flew the world’s first 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) flight from London Heathrow to New York JFK, demonstrating the feasibility of SAF as a replacement for fossil fuels in aviation. Benefits of using SAF include: 👉🏾 Similar performance as fossil fuels; 👉🏾 Fuel made from waste products; 👉🏾 SAF delivers CO2 lifecycle emissions savings of up to 70%; 👉🏾 The technology is readily available today - the current challenges lie in policy & investment; From an innovation perspective, this is a beautiful collaboration between industries and the innovation ecosystem - radical collaboration by a Virgin Atlantic-led consortium, including Boeing (aircraft), Rolls-Royce (engine), Imperial College London, The University of Sheffield, ICF and Rocky Mountain Institute (scientific research) in partnership with Department for Transport (policy). I do wonder about the implications on food security, given that the fuel is made from plant sugars. 🎙 ‘Carbon removals are an essential part of decarbonizing aviation.’ In my recent op-ed for Aviation Week Network, I discuss the urgent need for integrating carbon removal technologies into the aviation sector’s decarbonization strategy. While Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has dominated the conversation, carbon removals are going to be at least as significant in terms of the solution – with the potential to contribution 25-30% of aviation’s carbon reduction targets. Removals offer a scalable and cost-effective solution to complement SAF, which faces its own challenges like sustainable feedstock shortages and market fluctuations. The aviation industry has already laid the groundwork through its experience with SAF in navigating regulations, market integration, and financing. This positions us well to quickly adapt and integrate carbon removal solutions. With a combination of SAF and carbon removals, we stand the best chance of hitting ‘jet zero’. At Farnborough International Airshow on Monday, I’m looking forward to discussing this further on a panel with the brilliant Carrie Harris, Anna Stukas, Hemant Mistry and Myles Allen. Hope to see some of you there! 👉 Read the full piece I wrote for Aviation Week, here: https://lnkd.in/egi_pNag

🌍✈️Soaring to Sustainability: How Carbon Removal is Key to Aviation's Net Zero Goals 🚀 The #aviation #industry, responsible for 2% of global CO2 emissions, is crucial in the fight against climate change. With travel demands back to pre-pandemic levels, the urgency to decarbonize aviation is more pressing than ever. 🌱 The industry aims for net-zero flying by 2050, with strategies including updating fleets, improving operational efficiency, and exploring electric, hydrogen-powered aircraft, and sustainable aviation fuels (#SAF). However, SAF's high cost and low adoption rate, along with the nascent status of alternative technologies, pose challenges. 🌱 Carbon capture and removal technologies are emerging as vital tools. Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (#DACCS) is a leading method, where CO2 is filtered directly from the air. This technology is gaining support worldwide, with governments offering incentives. Major airlines are investing in carbon capture, viewing it as a complementary measure to long-term solutions like SAF. For more details, check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gs93ARw7

The push towards sustainable practices is gaining momentum as the industry embraces Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to meet net-zero targets. 🌎 Last year marked a significant milestone with Virgin Atlantic's first transatlantic flight powered entirely by SAF, showcasing the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions—up to 80% over its lifecycle! The journey towards greener skies is not without challenges. Financing large-scale SAF production remains complex, with short-term airline agreements complicating long-term investments. Additionally, the regulatory landscape varies globally, with Europe setting ambitious mandatory blending targets and the US offering tax incentives to stimulate production. Despite these hurdles, the drive continues. Companies like IðunnH2 are at the forefront, planning to operate a commercial-scale synthetic fuel facility by 2028 in Iceland, aiming to produce e-kerosene from green hydrogen and atmospheric CO₂. As the industry aligns technology, finance, and policy towards greener alternatives, the future is promising. 🚀 #Aviation #Sustainability #Innovation #NetZero #ClimateAction #GreenEnergy https://lnkd.in/dZkAgDeF
