We have joined the Great British Spring Clean 2024! 🚮 The Great British Spring Clean runs from March 15th to 31st. Now in its ninth year, it is the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign. As part of our litter-picking campaign, we will also be supporting Severn Rivers Trust with their Severn Spring Clean. We’ll gather data on the types and amounts of plastic waste collected during our GBSC litter picks. This information will fuel their campaign for change and help prevent further plastic pollution. 🌊♻️ 🌿 How Can You Get Involved? -Pledge: Commit to picking up a bag (or more!) of litter. -Spread the Word: Encourage others to join – the more, the merrier! Let’s make this spring a season of positive change. Together, we can create cleaner, greener spaces for all. 🌼🌎 #GBSpringClean #CleanUpOurWorld #keepbritaintidy #EnvironmentMatters #severnspringclean #GBSC2024

Happy #EarthDay! 🌎 2024’s theme is #PlanetVsPlastic. Plastic pollution is wide spread, accounting for at least 85% of total marine waste, according to the United Nations. The health of our planet is crucial to a fair and #JustEconomy. Pollution often impacts LMI communities and communities of color the most. Every choice counts! In the latest data on the International Coastal Cleanup, approximately 3.4 million waste items were gathered in the United States. Cigarette butts took the lead as the most prevalent, with over 540,000 collected. Plastic bottle caps and food wrappers were nearly as common. Making a conscious decision to avoid these items goes beyond personal choices; it's a powerful step in minimizing pollution and preserving our environment. #MakeADifference #SDG14

Plastic waste in the ocean is a significant environmental concern, harming marine life, ecosystems, and affecting human health. Efforts to reduce single-use plastics and promote recycling are crucial for addressing this global issue. 🌊 At Think Ocean we believe that each clean-up raises public awareness to the threat of marine litter in a very effective way. In various studies, volunteers say that participating in clean-up events makes them more mindful of how they dispose of their own waste. 🗑 #bethetide #oceanpollution #takeaction #oceanlife #curbingoceanpollution #marinelife #conservation #protecttheplanet #oceanlife

The fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment wrapped up earlier this week in Canada. As we await the outcomes, we can rewind ⏪ to revisit the INC-2 negotiations that took place in Paris back in June 2023. In the margins of the INC-2, the One Planet network - 10YFP hosted an event where solutions to curb plastic waste from across the One Planet Network were spotlighted, and industry came together to reflect on a range of strategies to #BeatPlasticPollution. ➡ Watch the Highlights from the event here: https://lnkd.in/e7ReBR67

Marine litter is a global problem. And it starts on land. Our editor in chief Helena Nageler-Petritz talked with Aditi Ramola and Oda Kristin Korneliussen about the CLOCC (Clean Oceans through Clean Communities) programme which supports the establishment of sustainable waste management systems. #marinelitter #plasticpollution #sustainability

National Action Plan webinar to combat plastic pollution, today at 1.00pm GMT (see details in post below) The awareness of how plastic waste at all levels in the environment impact adversely on marine health, which has a knock on impact on carbon capture and climate change is growing. According to marine biologist Howard Dryden, carbon dioxide is not the main problem, it is the disruption caused by microplastics, and the toxins that adhere to them that is causing a massive extinction of copepods, krill and other micro-organisms that facilitate much of the earth's carbon capture, not to mention being an important part of the marine foodchain: https://lnkd.in/e5xK8gEd Not only in our oceans, plastic has become ubiquitous in our food systems, transported into our bloodstreams and even via breastmilk. https://lnkd.in/eGF6R7cz How plastics enter our oceans and atmosphere is varied, as this paper discusses https://lnkd.in/eaUiw7fu also raising the possibility that nanoplastics potentially used in solar geoengineering may be the reason for plastics even being found high up in the stratosphere. Addressing the problem of plastic should be a core pillar for any climate action. Do join the call today to be informed and inspired. #oceanplastics #plasticpollution #microplastics #bloodplastics #healing #climate #climateaction
Don't miss it! Today at 1pm GMT+1, Common Seas and The Commonwealth Blue Charter are hosting a webinar focused on crafting National Action Plans (NAPs) to combat plastic pollution. Our event will explore the challenges, successes, and methodologies used by Commonwealth member countries in shaping NAPs, paving the way for ambitious national action and a future free from harmful plastics polluting our land and seas. Ocean conservancy is a very meaningful facet of our central CA coastal life... For Earth Week, Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Environmental Law Institute released a critically timed expert report for decision-makers, detailing how the U.S. government can take meaningful action – using its authority under existing law – to reduce plastic production, improve waste management, and minimize the amount of plastic entering our ocean. Tackling plastic pollution requires more than individual actions like beach cleanups and recycling. We need comprehensive policies that address every aspect of the plastic production cycle, from reducing how much is produced to improving waste management systems and innovating new materials. The good news is that, with increasing awareness of the harmful impacts of plastic production and pollution, momentum is growing behind new, stronger policies to turn the flow of plastic off at the tap. Now is the time to speak up! #earthweek24 #montereybayaquarium #saveourocean #environment

SHOCKING STATISTIC! DID YOU KNOW...? ...it is estimated there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050? Our efforts towards removing litter and waste from our beaches is vital to protect our seas and surrounding natural habitats. Read OSKA's latest blog "Fishing for Plastic: It’s Time to Clean Up Our Act!" to find out about the impacts to our coastline and what we can do to help reverse our actions. The Care Sector's responsibility to this environmental movement is also discussed, acknowledging how we can make a difference and increase our environmental efforts.
