Displacement room air distribution system project in mind? SCHAKO LIMITED first projects, 30 years ago, included bespoke displacement products allowing the high air volumes required today into the auditorium, airport, showroom, shop floor, supermarket, shopping centre etc. without causing drafts and allowing for ever changing hot spots, like groups of people and equipment. The photograph below is in a stylish Car manufacturers head office, where the aesthetics are as important as the engineering, something SCHAKO LIMITED value too.

During a recent layover at Zurich Airport, I found myself captivated by the seamless integration of the airport’s infrastructure. It was an architectural marvel – no HVAC ducts in sight, electrical conductors cleverly concealed, and not a single patch of paint on the walls. Everything was exposed, yet nothing seemed out of place. I stumbled upon a poster that caught my eye. Although it might have been in Swiss German, the illustrations hinted at something intriguing weaving through the building’s columns. This piqued my curiosity, and after some digging, I discovered the genius behind the design: Sustainable Innovation: The airport doesn’t rely on traditional HVAC systems for cooling and heating. Instead, it adopts a stripped-down approach to minimize material usage. Thermal Efficiency: The glass panels are not just for show; they’re glazed to act as a thermal buffer, regulating the building’s temperature naturally. Renewable Energy: The electrical systems are a testament to modern engineering, powered entirely by renewable sources. This experience has been a testament to the fact that when it comes to design, less can indeed be more. As someone who's always marvelled at the engineering feats achieved in creating the world's tallest skyscrapers, it's eye-opening to learn the carbon impact of 'vanity height'. The article states that "even a modest spire increases the carbon emissions from the production of materials for a skyscraper’s structure by about 15%." While they serve some practical purposes, such as providing structural stability, a lightning rod, and a host for communications, the height of these structures comes into question. How much of this is engineering vs vanity height? Something to think about given today's climate forecasts and how we as designers, can influence greater outcomes.

The revitalised complex combines history, functionality, and aesthetics. The Falkirk Wheel in Scotland is the world's only rotating boat lift, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. Opened in 2002, this iconic structure serves as a functional and aesthetic centerpiece, replacing a series of locks that once connected the two waterways. The wheel operates by lifting boats 24 meters in the air using a gondola system that rotates 180 degrees. Its ingenious design balances the weight of the water and boats, requiring minimal energy—about as much as boiling eight kettles.
