Responsible for about 3% of the world's total CO2 emissions, the maritime sector's footprint rivals that of major industrialized nations. The vast majority of the world's trade—approximately 90%—is carried by sea, with massive container ships and tankers burning heavy fuel oil, one of the dirtiest fossil fuels available.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions from shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. To achieve this, the industry is exploring various innovations and strategies - cleaner fuels like LNG and hydrogen, the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, and the design of more aerodynamic ship hulls, wind-assisted propulsion and electric vessels. Despite these efforts, the path to decarbonizing shipping is fraught with challenges, such as high costs and the need for global coordination.
Nonetheless, the push towards greener shipping is critical for meeting international climate goals and ensuring sustainable global trade

The UK and Ireland are collaborating on a first-of-its-kind project: 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀 connecting their ports.
This £100 million initiative by Peel Ports Group and Nat Power Marine will introduce several key elements:
𝗣𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: 𝗨𝗞'𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰-𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 is leading the way for wider green adoption
𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Tackling emissions throughout the shipping journey with 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝟴 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 across the Irish Sea route
𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿: Promoting electric vehicles on land by 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘀, 𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗚𝗩 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 at the ports
Establishing the worldwide network of clean energy charging infrastructure is the need of the hour since by the year 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬, the maritime trade is expected to grow threefold. This green initiative emphasizes the de-carbonization of maritime emissions which has surged up to 20% in the past decade, according to UNCTAD.
This new maritime development has brought a significant amount of relief to global marine conservation organizations and everyone who promotes a green environment.

6moGood work Ross. And that ferry route is also meant to be pretty good for whale watching if you do it in day light. Ferries always give me a child-like sense of embarking on a big adventure, a feeling I don't get from flying
