New economic data released today by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) shows that fishing and boating is the # 1 contributor to the outdoor recreation economy. “This BEA data proves what the fishing industry has always known – outdoor recreation is an economic force in the United States and is only getting bigger. Lawmakers have the opportunity to put this data to use by crafting policy that supports and promotes access, habitat improvement, and clean water to benefit our outdoor recreation economy.” -Glenn Hughes, President - ASA Thank you to Outdoor Recreation Roundtable for hosting this event.

Míle buíochas to Josephine ODriscoll, Don Colbert and the Fáilte Ireland Wild Atlantic Way team for organising the networking event yesterday The Maritime Hotel, and for inviting Manchan Magan along to share his experience with us. Such a well-run event, meeting with businesses from Kinsale to Kenmare, and everywhere in between. We are all passionate about what we do and where we live, and love to share this part of the Wild Atlantic Way with visitors, be they from Ireland or overseas. By finding out what other businesses in the area offer, we can promote each other too. We’re not competitors, we’re collaborators. We all call this area our home, we’re trying to make a living here, and trying to keep our communities vibrant, full of interesting places to go and things to do, people to meet and food to eat/drink. The Wild Atlantic Way Regional Tourism Development Five Year Strategy talks about “ensuring that ‘wildness’ remains at the core of the Wild Atlantic Way across all brand activity.” How wild is wild though? There is very little real wildness in Ireland anymore. Wildlife numbers have dropped dramatically, lots of land has been cleared to make way for monoculture pastures, wetlands have been drained and the hillsides are burnt off, overgrazed, or planted with monoculture conifers. Shifting baseline syndrome means that people think that what they see today is normal, but we’ve lost so much in the last fifty years or so, that it’s far from the rich, diverse Ireland of the 1960s. When did you last hear Corncrake, Curlew or Lapwing calling from their breeding grounds? Or see a Hedgehog? Where’s your nearest natural wild meadow? So, let’s all work together to make Ireland wilder, more biodiverse and a really awe-inspiring place to be for visitors and locals alike. Indoor pools are a great application for Rebound's Icepoint Technology. How can arborists look after their clients and our feathered friends. I used to think that leadership was rarified air. Like so many others, I’d accepted that some people just didn’t have that leadership potential. And I’d accepted I was one of those people that didn’t have the gene. But staying cynical is a choice, and it’s often an easy out. It lets us off the hook for taking responsibility, exerting the emotional labour, and doing the hard work of making a change. I’ve since come to realize that everyone has leadership potential—we’ve all got the gene. It’s part of being human, which means we can figure it all out together. You don’t have to use that potential if you don’t want to, because it is hard work. But now I know that’s a choice too. The scary part isn’t whether or not you have the potential to be a leader. The scary part is realizing you’re already a leader—and that you’ve got to choose action and risk failure. The good news is that’s part of being human too. But don’t take it from me, take it from Ms. Goodall…

There are a lot of parallels in this article that can be applied to others parts of #Colorado. Our rural communities are disappearing and in a state where outdoor activities are such a critical part to the economy, we need to emphasize the support for these types of events.
