In my Ted Talk that just got published, I ask a rhetorical question: When was the first time I heard the term Family Office? The answer is 1990. My dad had just been diagnosed with prostate cancer at the same that my first boss and mentor at Drexel Burnham Lambert, Michael Milken, was also diagnosed with prostate cancer. My dad did what most people would have done. He got second opinions. Third opinions. And went to the best doctors that he could find in order to find a cure. Michael Milken went about it entirely different. Rather than find the best doctors, he tried to find a cure himself. But instead of donating $100 million to the American Cancer Society, Milken took his money and built what closely resembled a venture capital fund investing in various companies that had one common theme -- finding a cure for prostate cancer. Fast forward 33 years. Because of Milken, most men, if we live long enough, will die with and not from prostate cancer. This is what I refer to as the intersection of prosperity and purpose. And this is my North star. Take an incredibly successful entrepreneur and have him use his business genius to solve a big problem that can benefit society. Family Offices are not a panacea to solve all of the big problems we face as a society (climate, poverty, diseases, etc...), but I do believe that Family Offices, many of whom are very philanthropic, will be a major catalyst in helping to make the world a better place. Thoughts? cc TEDx Milken Family Foundation #prostatecancer #Familyoffice #MichaelMilken

Please ignore the photo of me looking positively unhinged in mid-rant about technofeudalism. Instead, I wanted to echo Ryan's words about getting to spend a day with the leadership team at Pancreatic Cancer UK. It is absolutely one of the best bits of my job getting to work with organisations as they tackle head on the big opportunities, and the big challenges. And when it's a cause that's especially close to my soul it hits that bit harder. Walking home yesterday, as the sun was setting on the summer solstice, these are some of the nuggets that stayed close: 1. Ditch the term BAU. EVERYTHING is in service of the mission 2. Your values can and should steer every business decision 3. Data is great, but don't discount instinct. 4. If it's bleedingly obvious, just f*****g do it 5. The language we use to define ourselves as charities diminishes us - voluntary, third, not-for-profit. We are the IMPACT sector. 6. If a role has power it needs to be properly appraised 7. Set a north star. Everything should feed into that 8. Yes outside-in. But you don't have to blindly apply what others are doing 9. Embrace two-way door decision making 10. Prioritise RUTHLESSLY. Is it broken? Was it broken yesterday? Will it matter if it's still broken tomorrow? Then it's not the biggest priority. A massive thank you to Stacey Mulqueen, Tessa Clarke, James Alexander MBE and Felicia Willow for joining the day yesterday and helping steer our conversations. And to Diana Jupp for trusting Ryan and I with your time, thinking and team for the day.
Turns out that a start up founder, serial entrepreneur, strategy lead, and Mary Poppins have an awful lot in common. It was great to spend a day with the leadership team of Pancreatic Cancer UK to think about the future, and get inspired by other organisations and businesses. Keep an eye out for this charity, this team is going places. Big thanks to James Alexander MBE Stacey Mulqueen Felicia Willow Tessa Clarke for joining. And shout out to Daisy O'Reilly-Weinstock for designing it all. Intrigued to see where your conversations go next Diana Jupp Julie Roberts Sarah Bell Alfie B. Urgent request for help! My father has been diagnosed with a tumor in his prostate. With an 80% chance of developing into cancer if left untreated, this is a concerning situation. To make matters worse, he also has diabetes and heart problems, both of which increase the risk of prostate cancer. We've set up a crowdfunding campaign to help cover the costs of his treatment. Please consider visiting the link to help us out during this difficult time. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. https://goget.fund/3rB8W5J #crowdfunding #kickstarter #crowdfundingcampaign #indiegogo #fundraising #donate #support #startup #kickstartercampaign #crowdfund #help #funding #fundraiser #crowdfundingproject #art #charity #love #covid #business #entrepreneur #film #innovation #indiegogocampaign #kickstarterproject #gofundme #community #investment #design #music #p #n #donation #crowdfundingplatforms #startups #blockchain #crowdfunder #s #nonprofit #shortfilm #donations #comics #share #indiefilm #filmmaking #motivation #startnext #ulule #smallbusiness #crowdfundingplatform #investing #crowd #money #helpingothers #artist #impactguru #repost #healthcare #technology #m

This is a powerful testimony from Ronald Diamond, a great thought leader in our field, on the underestimated social and economic impact of private capital driving innovation and, ultimately, systems change. Many don’t realise that family office capital is very often a catalyst for some of the most impactful developments in medicine (the COVID vaccine being a very recent example). #privatewealth #familyoffice #medtech #venturecapital #socialimpact
