Our plan considers: ✅ 1. Our role as an organisation - our behaviors, buying choices, policies, messaging, supply chain decisions, travel choices. 🌟 2. Our role as an advocate for the local physical activity sector, to influence and inspire organisations delivering activity to consider their choices. 🚲 3. Our role in supporting the people of Lincolnshire. By walking and cycling more, we reduce our carbon footprint as well as being more active and enjoying being outdoors. Tomorrow, we celebrate #WorldEnvironmentDay, and with just 51 days to go until the Olympics in Paris, the team at Sports Environment Alliance thought it appropriate to highlight the efforts of one of our members, The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).🌱 As custodians of the Olympic Movement in Australia, the AOC recognises that sustainability and the specific challenge of climate change are major issues for the global community and pose a particular threat to sport. Back in 2020, the AOC committed to embracing sustainability in its day-to-day operations, measuring progress, advocating and educating with member sports and as such committed to reducing its emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2040. Within a year, it established a Sustainability Action Working Group and launched its first Climate Action Plan, committing to the five principles of the UN plan: 🌱Promote greater environmental responsibility 🌱Reduce overall climate impact 🌱Educate for climate action 🌱Promote sustainable and responsible consumption 🌱Advocate for climate action through communication To date, the AOC is supporting a number of its member national sporting associations to use The Toolbox to help these sports develop policies, procedures and commence implementation of their own Climate Action Plans and work towards reducing their greenhouse emissions. Some of SEA's members are involved in this Toolbox group and include Water Polo Australia, Hockey Australia, Athletics Australia and Swimming Australia. This Wednesday is World Environment Day.🌍 🌿 As the team at Sports Environment Alliance reflect on this year's theme being ''Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration," it's important to consider how the sport ecosystem can contribute to this mission. Here are three key ways in which sports can take action: 🌿Global Reach and Influence: Sporting events have a massive global audience. By integrating sustainable practices, sports can spread awareness and inspire millions to participate in environmental conservation efforts. 🌿Environmental Footprint: Sports venues and events consume significant resources and generate substantial waste. By adopting greener practices, such as reducing water usage and promoting recycling, they can significantly mitigate their impact on the environment. 🌿Inspiring Change: Athletes and sports organisations are role models. When they champion environmental causes, they influence fans and communities to take action in their own lives. 🌿Community and Legacy: Sports have the power to unite communities. Engaging fans in land restoration projects, promoting drought resilience practices, and raising awareness about desertification can foster a collective effort towards a sustainable future. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 Opportunity remains for the golf industry to collaborate on important issues that impact its many associations, facilities and other constituents. No universal forum or framework currently exists for the 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕 collaboration of major industry associations regarding the global issues outlined by the UN's sustainable development goals. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? Golf has a unique leadership opportunity. Since our founding in 2020, Driving the Green has sought to explore and create opportunities for golf to provide net positive and regenerative impacts in the communities where the game lives. We interview experts from a variety of backgrounds across the world to identify financially feasible and sustainable solutions in which golf can invest. Fundamentally, our solution is to combine "smart" with "heart"! We're helping golf lead social equity, economic prosperity and environmental sustainability in the communities where the game lives. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐟 𝐝𝐨 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭? ❖ Develop community partnerships to discover, implement and manage sustainability initiatives. ❖ Measure and report on the impact of the implemented initiatives and create community best management practices. Then, share these with industry peers! ❖ Embed golf course operations into broader scope climate action plans (city, state, provincial, national, and even international)! GEO's free OnCourse platform is a milestone and easy-to-use framework for leading sustainability in and through the game of golf.
