Natural gas is the 'cleanest fossil fuel' since it has the highest amount of hydrogen in any hydrocarbon fuel. To enable a faster and cost-effective energy transition we must devise technologies that utilize natural gas resources for energy generation, with minimum CO2 and methane emissions footprint. One such technology is Dry Methane Reforming (DRM), which converts methane and CO2, the two most potent greenhouse gases into syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. It has gained recent attention as a technology that could replace traditional steam methane reforming (SMR) for syngas generation. Dry methane reforming is not commercialized yet due to the primary challenge of severe carbon deposition that deactivates the catalyst (coking). However, BASF and Linde have together deployed mitigation measures to make DRM possible at a demonstration scale and are on track to soon launch the first commercial DRM plant. #Drymethanereforming #hydrogen #steammethanereforming #biogas #naturalgas #catalyst #emergingtechnology #futurebridge

Analysis of indirect power cycles for a novel methanol-to-methane TCES-CSP system The security of clean energy supply and renewable fuel production are key strategies to combat climate change. The widespread adoption of green fuels will necessitate industrial operations on hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and other fuels, leading to increased costs for stakeholders. This work proposes an alternative through a methanol-to-methane conversion system via an intermediate synthesis gas step. Methanol decomposition can be powered by #Concentrated #Solar Power #CSP at moderate temperatures (<350°C) and low cost, while methanation is a well-established industrial process occurring at temperatures <625°C. The integration of these processes serves as a method of solar storage using high-pressure syngas for power production in conventional cycles. Various configurations, including recuperative ORC, Rankine steam, and a sCO2 Brayton cycle, were integrated, all showing techno-economic interest with round-trip efficiencies over 50% and levelized costs (LCOE) below EUR 55/MWh. This system offers a solution for the large-scale deployment of methanol as a green hydrogen carrier, efficiently storing thermochemical energy and producing high-purity methane, usable in other power cycles or as industrial feedstock. https://lnkd.in/diYYs2XT #solar #thermal #concentrated Diego Antonio Rodriguez Pastor Israel Marqués Valderrama Víctor Soltero Ricardo Chacartegui

FuelsEurope has announced a Joint Statement on the Low-Carbon Fuels certification Delegated Act Low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives, produced from non-renewable energy sources, achieve a GHG emissions reduction threshold of 70% and are set to become a significant part of the hydrogen supply and demand, especially as we transition towards #NetZero. Defining the necessary elements for the certification of low-carbon fuels (Art. 9 of the Hydrogen and Gas Directive) is vital for establishing a clear regulatory framework to support the ramp-up of these fuels.

💡 Methanol is a promising low-cost hydrogen carrier given its high energy density, ease of transportation, and lower risk compared to ammonia. M2X Energy Inc. is dedicated in minimizing the cost and carbon intensity of the integrated process from crude methanol production, transporting methanol as low-cost carrier for hydrogen, then reforming methanol to hydrogen at point of use. One question that we are particularly interested in is if the energy intensive upgrading step can be bypassed for an electrochemical route to reform M2X's low-carbon methanol to hydrogen. To answer the question Chen Hsiang-Sheng (Johnson) is working towards understanding the associated energy penalties when crude methanol is used 'as-is' in electrolysis. This project is supported by FSEC® and M2X Energy Inc.. Read more here https://lnkd.in/esakUFGb #Hydrogen #Methanol #Sustainability #Innovation
