We’re pleased to share a new impact report for the East Metro Main Street Economic Revitalization Program, which supported 42 Saint Paul nonprofits and businesses that faced immense challenges the past four years due to the pandemic, civil unrest and other obstacles. With support from Mardag Foundation and other funding partners, the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development granted $3.7 million to nonprofits and $3.3 million to businesses in the Snelling-University-Rice Cultural District, the East Side community and along West Seventh Street in Saint Paul. 100% of the funded projects serve communities that have been historically under- and dis-invested by traditional funding, and 85% of the projects are owned or led by people of color. We’re proud to have been a partner in this program and support the vitality of East Metro communities. HomeClub looks at hundreds of articles every day. We choose the best ones to share with our readers. This gives you a quick look at what's happening in the home improvement industry. The article below is one we picked. Community revitalization efforts can have a profound impact on local residents, fostering a sense of belonging and improving quality of life. Lowe's Foundation Hometowns program exemplifies this by awarding $10 million in grants to 100 nonprofits across the United States, as reported by Lowe's Companies, Inc.'s newsroom. These grants will fund diverse projects, from building tiny homes for veterans in South Dakota to creating a community garden in Detroit. By supporting initiatives that address specific local needs, Lowe's is not only improving physical spaces but also strengthening community bonds and providing essential services to vulnerable populations. This commitment to community development demonstrates the power of corporate social responsibility in creating lasting positive change. The Salvation Army Silicon Valley continues to innovate and address the needs in our community! We shared with Mayor Matt Mahan our Phase II (or Grass Lot) project. We are going to leverage our existing property to add more shelter space using temporary facilities for 10 years: - About 75 beds - To be used when we are remodeling Emmanuel House - Will continue to be a sober living environment - Will continue to provide overnight and transitional services - Will leverage our existing staff and our 60 years of programing expertise - Will continue to operate on private funds - $6 million dollar project - Santa Clara County will identify $4 million - A private donor will provide $1 million All we ask of the City of San José is to help us navigate the entitlement processes and for $1 million. I cannot think of a better investment into the community right now than The Salvation Army. We have the property, we have the expertise, have the 140 years of history in San Jose and we have the motivation to change lives. Let's make this happen! #innovate #unhoused #marginalized #foodinsecurity #doingthemostgood #disruptiveinnovation

Investing in community building is vital to our ability to fight poverty and illiteracy. By fostering strong, interconnected communities, we increase our chances of creating a network of support that amplifies our efforts, increases the sharing of resources, and encourages local participation. Community building cultivates a sense of ownership and empowerment among residents, leading to sustainable change and improved outcomes. It also facilitates collaboration with other stakeholders, such as local governments, businesses, and other nonprofit organizations, to address the root causes of poverty and illiteracy. Ultimately, investing in community building serves the philosophy we're built on - strengthening the social fabric, enabling holistic development and lasting impact.

Having homes for our workforce is crucial to the strength of our local economy and our community as a whole. Being able to live and work in Emmet County, however, is becoming increasingly difficult as the number and price of available homes does not meet demand. Throughout our 32 years, the Community Foundation has built a proud history of connecting people, organizations, resources, and ideas. As we’ve grown and developed, we find ourselves uniquely positioned to be a catalyst for positive solutions in our community. When confronting the housing shortage in Emmet County, we had to ask ourselves, “If not us, then who?” This question served as a powerful impetus for action when the opportunity arose to bring 60 new apartments to downtown Petoskey via the Lofts at Lumber Square. In November 2023, we hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Lofts at Lumber Square alongside our project partners, including Haan Development, Northern Homes Community Development Corporation, and a host of state agencies, funders, and donors. Construction has since begun, with new apartments expected to be available in 2025. The Lofts project is just one example of the way the Community Foundation is working with generous donors, non-profits, and businesses to create meaningful solutions to the challenges facing our communities. It’s no secret that the Bay Area has affordable housing challenges. One interesting model for addressing this is a Community Land Trust (CLT). A CLT is a nonprofit organization that manages land and offers housing for the benefit of a community, enabling it to become stronger and more equitable.
