There are increasingly pervasive mental health issues that adolescents are experiencing. If we can help kids understand what they’re feeling and give them a language, that’s the beginning of being able to give them help. In this episode, Dr. Graham Taylor speaks with Mark Cloutier. Mark is the CEO of Caminar, Inc., a non-profit community-based agency that has been providing support services to individuals with mental health disorders for more than 50 years. Before joining Caminar, Mark held leadership roles in prominent health organizations and foundations, such as Horizons Services, the San Francisco Foundation, the Center for Youth Wellness, Kaiser Family Foundation, and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. A longstanding resident of the Bay Area, Mark is a graduate of Lewis and Clark College, and earned Master of Public Policy and Master of Public Health degrees at the University of California, Berkeley. He's also a published author, having co-authored Prevent, Screen, Heal: Collective Action to Fight the Toxic Effects of Early Life Adversity. We’re excited to have Mark with us today to discuss community-based mental health and prevention efforts for teens and young adolescents. As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, we aim to spotlight the unique challenges encountered by individuals with Down syndrome. Did you know that at least half of all children and adults with Down syndrome will confront a significant mental health issue during their lifetime, a statistic comparable to the general US population? Locating providers who possess the necessary expertise to support individuals with Down syndrome can be challenging for families. At the EPDSC, we offer assistance by linking you with our team at the LVPG Down Syndrome Medical Clinic, providing educational resources on these subjects, or connecting families with a parent-to-parent mentor who has firsthand experience in navigating these challenges. Let's use the end of Mental Health Awareness Month as a launching pad for ongoing conversations about the mental well-being of individuals with Down syndrome. By raising awareness and providing support, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society. #MentalHealthMatters #InclusionForAll

🔥 What if Smokey Bear only taught us how to put out fires? When it comes to the #youthmentalhealth crisis, it seems we have more and more fires to put out and they are arriving more and more frequently. Our systems and resources just can't keep up. We have been focused most on services to address this crisis. And while access to and equity for appropriate #mentalhealth services should remain a top priority, it alone is simply not enough. 🛑 We can't only treat our way out of this crisis. 🛑 Every school and community needs #mentalhealthliteracy (MHL) education. With MHL, people learn how to support their own mental health as well as the mental health of those in their care. They can challenge #stigma, recognize signs of concerns early, and address them appropriately. MHL offers people the language and the confidence to engage in conversations they may otherwise avoid. MHL is a proactive, upstream solution to this crisis. 💦 To learn more about MHL and how to bring it to your community, download our Advocacy Toolkit: https://lnkd.in/eUiSKRGR Join us upstream. #theMHLC #upstream #communityhealth #prevention #earlyintervention
