Is the communications industry too middle-class? “What class war is that industry structure going to fight but a bourgeois one?” ... Some of my thoughts are included in this PRWeek UK piece by Siobhan Holt. Think I'm the first person to say "surplus value" in PRWeek, if my searches of the website are to be believed. #PRWeek #class #unionisation #PRagencies #UKcomms #UKpublicrelations
DE&I has been a central part of our business from day 1. As our knowledge and understanding has grown (and continues to grow) we are increasingly focused on intersectionality. As a result we now measure beyond gender and race of our employees, to include disability and socio-economic background. One of our Senior Consulting Directors, Cathal Wogan shared his views with PRWeek UK on whether the communications industry is too middle-class and how the sector should improve its social diversity. Spoiler alert, yes it is too middle class and there's plenty we could be doing to improve its diversity. Read more on the link below... https://lnkd.in/eCwZY4us

Representation matters. Increased inclusion and representation benefit everyone, enhancing our pop culture, media, and society as a whole. Let's work towards a more diverse and representative world. Hopefully the trend in this article of declining representation will be turned around.. #RepresentationMatters #PopCulture #Media

Imagine that this little girl is you at work everyday. Forward this post to anyone who doesn’t understand why: 🪞representation matters 👩🏽👦🏾we need employee resource groups 🏢 people may not want to come into your office 4-5 days per week 👥 we might find it challenging to build relationships and connect with our colleagues 🥇we may struggle to see ourselves ascending to the highest levels of your organization when very few people (if any) who look like us have been able to do it #representationmatters #employeeresourcegroups #microaggressions #blackhistorymonth Artist: Chris Buck, Oprah Magazine

Now that Pride is over, businesses have 11 months to decide what kind of ally they want to be to the LGBTQI+ community, and how they want to communicate. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ There are those that are taking meaningful action beyond their own four walls - sponsoring activism with organisations such as GiveOut, making the business case for allyship with Open For Business, or lobbying governments for equality and decriminalisation (Stonewall, Outright International, ILGA-Europe, etc.). For those companies not moving the needle on equality, it’s fine to be silent. Avoid performative allyship, and leave the rainbow communications to the real changemakers. Check out my piece in PRWeek UK for Shape History:
Nobody cares that you’re an LGBTQI+ ally

#impulseoftheweek by Silvana El Sayegh ✨ "💥I love challenging stereotypes and political correctness!💥" It's Saturday morning, and I stop by the farmer's market to ask for a basket of strawberries. 🍓 The friendly lady there says, "How nice that you speak the language so fluently! Where do you come from?" 🤔 As you can imagine, it's frustrating when a stereotype hits me directly. But what bothers me more is noticing how people are eager to ask questions but fear crossing the line of political correctness. 🙄 This fear of appearing politically incorrect often leads to distance in cross-cultural interactions, and it extends to other areas of diversity as well. A culture of guilt makes people feel judged and inhibited. Over time, they become convinced of their own biases, express them anonymously on social media, or, in the worst cases, fall for populist arguments and vote for extreme-right parties. So, what does this have to do with advertising? 🤔 👉 Political correctness in campaigns can be counterproductive! By fearing public backlash, brands often end up stereotyping diversity. People filled with stereotypes feel alienated or even threatened, staying within their bubbles. 🫧 So, what's the solution? ✨ 👉 We need more authenticity in the conception of campaigns! Agencies must embrace #inclusion by creating environments where minorities can check for biases and members of the dominant group are open to shifting their mindset and questioning their ideas. We should live #diversity, not just preach it! 🤷🏻♀️ Returning to the lady selling strawberries 🍓, my answer is simple: "I'm from here!" 😉 How do you react to stereotyping and biased opinions? #advertising #jvm #inclusion #diversity #fightracism #agency #stuttgart

Brodmann Iraq's Noor Shihab says that being a DE&I ally means listening actively, promoting diversity within teams, and stepping in to support colleagues facing challenges or exclusion. "Companies must be ready to tailor roles and expectations to fit individual strengths and challenges, ensuring that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords but integral to the workplace culture. This means moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach and genuinely managing and nurturing each individual’s unique contributions," Shihab said. Read more of her opinions on DE&I in the article below. #Advertising #WomenInAdvertising #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion
