𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞 CARIM researchers Tim van Loon, Jesse Rijks, Johan V., Joey Wolffs, Richard Cornelussen (BSc, PhD), Nick van Osta, Justin Luermans, Frits Prinzen, Dominik Linz, Vanessa Van Empel, Tammo Delhaas, Kevin Vernooy and Joost Lumens have discovered a promising new approach to treating diastolic heart failure, a condition affecting around 120,000 people in the Netherlands. Using virtual heart models, they found that increasing the heart rate, rather than slowing it, can improve the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively. In a study with 75 patients, pacemakers were used to raise heart rates by 20-30 beats per minute, producing results consistent with simulations: improved heart function and reduced symptoms like fatigue and breathlessness. The team is now exploring dual-chamber pacemakers to further enhance outcomes. 3BAtwin is a European Union Twinning Project coordinated by FCiências. ID/CIÊNCIAS-ULisboa (Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa) which aims to capacitate them with the various specific/fine knowledge and tools which will allow to accelerate Medical Microwave Imaging (MMWI) from the research bench to the patient bedside. ✨The main objective of 3BAtwin is for FC. ID/CIÊNCIAS-ULISBOA to gain excellence capacity in all sub-fields related to MMWI research, and become strong competitors in translating their unique breast and axillary region device to the hospital, which will be possible by further establishing a solid collaboration with project partners: University of Galway (GALWAY) in Ireland, and Politecnico di Torino (POLITO, Politecnico di Torino) in Italy. 🚀 3BAtwin launched on the 1st of September of 2024 and its Kick-Off Meeting is scheduled for the 2nd – 3rd of October in Lisbon.
