🌿 Approximately one third of BAT’s Scope 3 CO2e emissions are in the tobacco supply chain, which requires building an integrated approach addressing impacts across the value chain and the total lifecycle of products. BAT Brazil is an example that partnerships with suppliers (tobacco growers) is an important path to achieve emissions reductions. BAT regularly review and model farmers’ carbon impact and sequestration potential. It’s no longer news that the groundbreaking event in the Nigerian Circular Economy industry at the moment is the Circular Economy Strategy Week, or #CEStrategyWeek2024 for short. The #CEStrategyWeek2024, led by the Netherlands Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development and the Circular Business Platform took place from March 25th to 28th, bringing together experts, entrepreneurs, government officials, and stakeholders in the Circular Economy industry to deliberate on best practices for creating circular market value in four identified sectors: 𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕, 𝒂𝒈𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆, 𝒆-𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆-𝒕𝒐-𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 sectors in the country. It was an intensive and extensive deliberation focused on identifying areas where Dutch-Nigerian partnerships can create the most value in building and scaling circular business models in Nigeria. Now Waitrose & Partners has unveiled its ambitions to help 2,000+ of its supplier farmers to adopt #regenerativefarming practices, and to certify all of its fresh produce growers under LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming). Waitrose has been trialling #regenerativeagriculture practices at Leckford Estate farm in Hampshire since 2020. The SAF used for ‘Flight100’ was made from a blend of 88% Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA), which utilises waste fats, oils, and greases as feedstock, and 12% synthetic aromatic kerosene (SAK), derived from plant sugars. This isn't just another business deal – it's a significant step forward for both CMA CGM and Nestlé. Wondering why? In a nutshell, Nestlé has opted to replace fossil fuels, primarily VLSFO, with second-generation biofuel (made from waste) for transporting all their containers with us. Our ACT+ products facilitate this transition, ensuring compliance with existing norms and best practices, all audited and reviewed by an external auditor. Reason 1 - It's a Game-Changer: This deal isn't just a drop in the ocean; it's massive. Over 70kt CO2 reduced, and Nestlé is fully committed, covering all their shipments with us. In 2023, this move is bold, sending a clear signal that some of our customers – not just a small, marginal group – are eager to move faster than regulatory requirements. Reason 2 - Public Commitment: Nestlé has agreed to make this commitment public. It might seem counterintuitive, as many major customers are usually hesitant to publicly announce their eco-friendly initiatives, fearing accusations of greenwashing. Having Nestlé as a prominent name allows us to bring the carbon footprint discussion to the forefront of all our customer interactions. Going public puts pressure on everyone – Cargo Owners, Carriers, and regulators alike. While it doesn't magically solve the climate change issue, it's undeniably a step in the right direction.
