Our #SolarSaves series travels to Ioannina, Greece to speak with Ioanna Angelaki, member of CommonEn - the city's first energy community made up of 60 members. CommonEn has invested in two #solar PV park installations with a capacity of 100kW each. “Initially, our motivation was to save money,” Ioanna explains. “But very soon, we found ourselves setting broader goals, like fighting energy poverty and meeting the needs of our city's residents. It became about more than just energy – it became about community.” Read the full story here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eJrztDaZ

I teach, write, and speak about business ethics, social innovation, and building meaningful careers, helping people go from intentions to impact.
If you’re inclined to believe that solving things like poverty (in this case energy poverty) just takes a bunch of money and willpower, then I strongly recommend this article. It’s a real-world example of why scaling solutions is hard: complex problems, competing interests, hidden subsidies, and so on. I do think we’re headed to a future where solar infrastructure becomes the default power solution in much of the world, but this article illustrates what it will take to get there. The solution ... Dirk Vansintjan, President of REScoop.eu, EUSEW digital ambassador, and Stavroula Pappa and Felix Kriedemann, Policy Advisors at REScoop.eu discuss the EU’s second generation of legislation recognising the role energy communities play in different activities. The EU’s Clean Energy for All Europeans Package (CEP, 2019) introduced provisions for ‘renewable energy communities’ (RECs) and ‘citizens energy communities’ (CECs) for the first time, empowering citizens to take ownership of renewables instead of exclusively depending on corporations. While energy communities have come a long way since 2019, several barriers still exist, including issues with accessing the grid, lack of funding opportunities, and complex administrative and regulatory procedures. #EnergyCommunities #RenewableEnergy #GreenEnergy Click the link below to discover more ⬇ https://bit.ly/3TtlCGZ

Charting the Energy Transition Pathway in Africa: Energy Justice for Communities- Distributive Justice Renewable Energy is projected to drive the advancement of the global energy transition. Nevertheless, despite the positive forecasts and predictions, when viewed from the angle of social acceptability of renewable energy, particularly in community settings, the energy transition can be viewed as being somewhat skewed. This is highly probable when viewed from the perspective of historically marginalised communities, which brings to fore the tenets of energy justice, in terms of recognition, restorative, distributive and procedural justice. The principle of distributive justice advocates for the fair allocation of resources among diverse community members, in terms of the distribution of benefits and burdens between members of a society or community and the sub-principle of local benefits promotes the distribution of resources for the enhancement of the public goods of local communities, particularly the historically marginalised. Distributive justice exists as one of the tenets of energy justice within the social justice literature; with public policy serving as a key solution to correct injustices. Distributive justice seeks to analyse the fair distribution of costs and risks of the energy transition. Distributive justice also interrelates with procedural justice, bordering on the governance and decision-making processes in the energy transition journey within respective communities. The fairer the distribution of renewable resources to communities, the greater the propensity of the communities to adopt renewable energy sources, which will endanger productive uses of energy. Equity fosters the motivation to produce as has been opined. Nevertheless, before distributive strategies are deployed under the energy justice tenet, there needs to be a recognition of the injustices that have been imposed; to carve out restorative and distributive strategies, to align with local community aspirations, in driving the energy transition pathway for communities. #electricitylawyer #foundersnotes #electricitymarkets #powersector #subsaharanafrica #energytransition #energyaccess #communities #climatechange #energyjustice #renewableenergy

Challenging Exclusion of Ethiopia, Home to 10% of the World's Off-Grid Low-Income (Hardest to Reach) Population and Democratizing Energy. How can we ensure that initiatives like Acumen's Hardest-to-Reach truly leave no one behind? It's disheartening to see that Ethiopia, a country with the most off-grid low-income people and holding 10% of the world's off-grid population, not included in this important endeavor. As Acumen fellows, lovers, and supporters, how can we advocate for comprehensive solutions that address the needs of all communities, especially those facing the greatest energy challenges? Let's discuss and work towards inclusive, impactful change together #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #HardestToReach #AcumenImpact #EnergyAccess #AcumenInitiative #CleanEnergy #UniversalEnergyAccess #cop28 Acumen The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP)Alem Gebru GebremeskelESEDA (Ethiopian Solar Energy Development Association)EWiEn :Ethiopian Women in Energy Kibret AbebeBirikit Terefe Tiruneh Engidawork Lemma Suleiman Shifaw Hiwot Emishaw Jacqueline Novogratz Green Climate Fund Business Info Ethiopia (BIE) Ethiopia Energy Market Accelerator (EMA)Social Enterprise Ethiopia Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI)Precise. Today marks a significant step toward universal energy access as we unveil Hardest-to-Reach. This is Acumen’s $250 million initiative to bring clean energy to 16 markets in sub-Saharan Africa. Globally, 675 million people live without access to electricity, and 80% of them live in Africa, a situation that is derailing the continent’s clean energy future. Hardest-to-Reach aims to bring first-time energy access to people who currently use dangerous fuels like kerosene, firewood, and charcoal. These communities have been let down by a global financial system that has denied them much-needed investment in clean sources of energy. Our entrepreneurs are showing that even in the “risky” markets, electrification does not have to be a dream—it can be a reality. Hardest-to-Reach is defying market forces to provide clean electricity to the people who need it most.
