“There are moments of architecture that you don’t get to represent in a plan or an elevation, things like social or cultural values, that’s what these animations or populated drawings get you to do – you get to celebrate these culturally significant or socially significant moments.” - Marcin Chmura, Architect at GPAD, uses sketching and illustration as a tool to portray the social value and ESG drivers for our design of 180 Old Street. The illustration describes our design aspirations in a playful and lively manner, communicating the drivers behind it.   We have worked extensively in Islington for twenty years and our office is a couple of minutes from the site – it’s an area we enjoy contributing to. The two buildings that form the site have seen a series of refurbishment and extension projects over the last ten years since we first looked at them for our client and we are now investigating how the two buildings move into the next stage of their lives.   The project will look to retain one building and dismantle parts of the other before extending and linking the two to create one building with larger more flexible floorplates. Best-in-class amenity, terracing and wellness are key parts of the brief, as is the response to the climate crisis. Proposals are being developed with an understanding of the whole life cycle carbon associated with a series of options to ensure the design is developed consciously.   180 Old Street seeks to respond to and enhance the local area socially, environmentally, and aesthetically. The client brief was to design a beautiful, practical, low-energy, detached house for a rural site in Somerset. Detached houses do not, of course, easily lend themselves to low-energy use and the farmyard location also presented a very specific context for the building. Associate, Alex Watson relished the challenge and spent time with the client early on exploring alternative concepts. Close listening and working with clients will always be fruitful, often leading to the most unexpected creative ideas. Here particular attention was taken with energy usage, heat gain, water capture and heat loss, all elements critical to ensuring we provided our clients with the low energy house they wanted. Designing a beautiful house meant incorporating practical usability alongside delightful detailing. Creating meaningful housing spaces requires more than simply building structures - it demands thoughtful design that responds to environmental and social needs. For our Mapsko Group Mountville project, the design began with identifying challenges unique to the site, such as the arid climate and community needs. The introverted courtyard planning of the residential towers, combined with thick plantation, creates a cooling microclimate within the development. This conscious integration of natural elements offers a refreshing contrast to the harsh regional conditions. Site circulation was another critical focus, and by minimising intersections between pedestrian and vehicular movement, the design ensures residents' safety and ease of access. The built mass and landscape balance materiality and geometry, with modular planning making the project adaptable and cost-efficient. In projects like this, the design schematic fostered a connected community and a response to environmental challenges.
