We are excited to have our Managing Director Rachel Wanyoike speak in a panel at The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA) Leadership forum. Rachel will highlight Solidaridad's role in promoting agroecology and how we engage agribusinesses and smallholder farmers. Agroecology is a crucial aspect of the global response to deforestation, biodiversity loss, soil depletion, and greenhouse gas emissions, which deplete and degrade the biodiversity that supports food systems. Natural resources and ecosystems give food production inputs for food systems to function. To advance agroecology and regenerative practices, stakeholders should: challenge the industrial food system's economic and political power structures with alternative social structures and policies. Solidaridad East and Central Africa scale business ecosystems where farmers and cooperatives/industries realize that agrarian and agricultural structural changes are needed to increase organic food production and market access. Our projects incorporate agroecology, which is sustainable commodity farming that works in balance with nature. #ChangeThatMatters

🌽 🐄 Our #foodsystems today face major challenges. But change is coming! We can unite and transform our food systems towards social and environmental #sustainability and #justice through #agroecology. Agroecology—working with #nature, not against it—provides solutions and is increasingly backed by scientists, social movements, #farmers, and governments. They have come together in a Coalition with the mission to accelerate the #transformation of food systems through agroecology. Since its launch in 2021, the ever growing Agroecology Coalition now brings together around 300 #diverse members, both governments and organizations. 🚀 Following a year-long consultative process, the Agroecology Coalition just launched an ambitious #strategy to rapidly accelerate the transition to sustainable agroecological #foodsystems. Among its commitments are: 💰 Fostering increased #investments for agroecology 💬 Facilitating co-creation and exchange of knowledge on agroecology 📣 Advocating for and amplify supportive #policies 👩🌾Developing dynamic local, territorial, national and regional #markets and inclusive business models More about the Coalition: https://lnkd.in/deEq6d9S Read the strategy: https://lnkd.in/dW4XatTv

🫶Today, we are thankful for our time to rest! But we are also grateful for the movement that is agroecology and the social connections and collaboration it requires we build and utilize for food systems transformation. ✨Agroecology provides a different sort of nourishment that cannot be found when working in isolation and acknowledges that transformation is only possible through collective action with diverse alliances of farmers, farm workers, policy-makers, food justice advocates, and all the non-human beings that we rely on for nourishment. We thank agroecology for relying on collective processes for knowledge generation (e.g., Participatory action research), dissemination into practice (e.g., campesino a campesino), building global networks between food systems actors, and building alliances across class, race, gender, and other binaries for true food systems transformation.

What is agroecology? Why is it important for a healthy, resilient food system? Where and how do finance actors come into the picture? Agroecology is a bottom-up, context-specific approach to food production. Foundational elements of this approach include delivering nature-positive outcomes and enhancing agricultural biodiversity. This approach is particularly important for a healthy, resilient food system in Southeast Asia because of… 🌏 …the region’s vulnerability to climate impacts and fast-growing population which call for a holistic approach to the region’s challenges in order to restore soil health, regenerate landscapes, enable diversification of food and energy sources, and enable producers and communities to thrive. 🌏 …production intensification and related natural resource depletion can result in one fifth of the population remaining food-insecure, thus putting the sustainability and effectiveness of Southeast Asia’s food and protein systems in question. 🌏 …the adoption of industrialised approaches to help ensure food security and maintain yield growth has resulted in a shift away from traditional agroecology, contributing to overfishing, deforestation and less healthy diets. 🌏 …the food system in Southeast Asia is made up of mostly smallholder farms, necessitating an approach that places the farmers at the core by recognising human and social values such as solidarity, co-creation and knowledge-sharing as essential ingredients of policy. At a recent launch event organized by FAO and Biovision Africa Trust titled “National Agroecology Strategies: Lighthouses for food system transformation”, we learnt about the unprecedented momentum for agroecological national action in Eastern and Southern Africa. Agroecology is a sustainable approach to agriculture that incoporates nature. The National Agroecology Strategies are frameworks that strengthen a country’s policies related to food systems and outline specific policy interventions that accelerate food system transformation through agroecology. They drive improvements in food security, climate resilience, biodiversity, water usage, soil protection and farm incomes, among many others. The best part? These strategies target all parts of the food system, including agricultural production, natural resource management and governance, research and extension, education, value chain development, markets, consumption and food waste governance. WingFarm is grateful to be part of a great movement that supports our vision - to help rural communities throughout Africa realize their full potential. #kilimonimboka #nationalagroecologystrategies #foodsystemtransformation
