Roger Federer's speech was viral for all the right reasons! At A Degree Above, we saw this pain Roger talks about amongst a lot of young professionals we worked with - this feeling of being lost (as he puts it- 'what are you going to do for the rest of your life'). Just like on the court, finding your purpose takes practice, #resilience, and a willingness to learn. Are you ready to find your 'A Degree Above'?
Watch this space for our exciting update to help you find your extra degree!

With Wimbledon on this week, and us being an SW19 based business, I thought I’d ‘serve’ up an ‘ace’ tennis related post.
Roger Federer, one of the best sportsmen of all times, let alone tennis players, played 1,526 single matches.
Of all the points he competed for, he only won 54% of the points he played!
Just over half.
Top billers in recruitment do not place every candidate they work with.
Too many recruiters focus on what does not go their way and get disheartened.
If you place 50% of people you work with (that would be impressive), then build a pipeline that represents this stat.
Focus on the output, expect the losses, and celebrate the wins.
Losers focus on what goes wrong and waste too much energy on feeling sorry themselves.
Those successful in life find a way to win, regardless of how much they lose.
Life lessons from Roger Federer's 2024 Dartmouth commencement speech are #everything. From "'Effortless'… is a myth" to "It's only a point" (do your best, but then move on) to "Grit is greater than gift" and "Life is bigger than the court", Roger really touched on all the key points about careers and life in general, including "be kind". Hope you get a chance to listen to the whole thing... inspiring for sure.

You may have seen this.
A perfect example of how our version of “winning” probably doesn’t match the reality.
And an example of resilience in action. When a top ranked tennis player wins just over half of the points available - we need to listen to how he moves on from each defeat.
“When it’s behind you, it’s behind you. It frees you to fully commit….”
Now who is going to Wimbledon 🎾 and who will take me 🤩

🏉 It's the curtain raiser at #rwc2023 this evening with Les Bleus taking on the most successful Rugby nation in history, the New Zealand #allblacks
❔ What has made the All Blacks the best over time? Their success centres on their rugby ability and national obsession with the game, however there are also 15 All Blacks Principles the team follows.
🏅 This gives them a unique culture and environment to thrive in.
⚡ We are going to explore the principles and how one might assess them in a prospective team member:
1️⃣ Sweep The Sheds
Never be too big to do the small things that need to be done...teach yourself humility.
When looking for a new leader, manager or team member - if this principle is important to your organisational culture, you can assess whether candidates possess it by assessing #personality and #emotionalintelligence traits.
We will dig deeper into these solutions as the tournament goes on...
For now, enjoy the Rugby!

Einstein''s letters or lectures to his children could not make his children Albert Einsteins !
And his children were Einsteins ❗️
Federer giving a speech prepared by the wonderful people he pays is beautiful but will not last in your consciousness.
You will never be Federer. Listening to him is useless !
You internal science matters.
The only thing that matters is, whether you have
#scientifictemper
( Jawahar Lal Nehruj),
#scientificmethod and #scientificvalues
( Federer's personal #sciencetificdata made him)
Science knows your
#behavioralneurology ( #neurobiology = brain, mind body , blood, microbiology, chemistry, physics - pay attention to that.
Pay attention to #Science.
Your #cognitivescience will only listen to your #personalscience because you are made of that science ❗️
Only science tells it 100% pure, and your brain , once trained, is not swayed by love or emotion - just pure truth of clean unbiased data prepared by trillions of hours hard work by millions of great and real champions - called SCIENTIST !
You will only need scientifictemper.

An inspiring message from Roger Federer about the lessons from his life-career journey. Of the many excellent points he makes, my favorite was the following.
He won 54% of all the points he played, yet he won 80% of all the matches he played!
Even a small, but consistent, performance edge at a micro-scale integrates to a much bigger macro-scale advantage over a period of time.
Every small effort matters. Consistency matters.
“Talent has a broad definition. Most of the time it’s not about having a gift; it’s about having grit.
In tennis, a great forehand with sick racket head speed can be called a talent. But in tennis, like in life, discipline is also a talent, and so is patience. Trusting yourself is a talent. Embracing the process, loving the process, is a talent. Managing your life, managing yourself - these can be talents, too.
Some people are born with them. Everybody has to work at them.”
Roger Federer’s commencement speech has been eagerly shared within my circles these past few days. Why is it so... shareable?
Federer applies a wide range of public speaking techniques, such as a sense of humour, the rule of three, or easy-to-visualise examples (I can sense some speechwriting support!). He also shares many personal stories, including those about imperfect human nature and flaws we all can relate to.
However, what truly stands out is the wonderful analogy of tennis 🎾 providing lessons for life. We have probably heard the same messages a million times before, but isn’t it nice to discover yet another way of packaging them? It’s like unwrapping a birthday gift we already expect to like. That’s what I love commencement speeches for, too.
If you haven’t seen this one yet, #MondayMotivation will be just the right excuse. ↓

Wisest words ever spoken from a person I look up to not just as a tennis player but as a north star for being a great human being:
Three lessons from his commencement speech:
1. Effortless is a myth: True success comes from hard work and determination. Let your results speak for your dedication and grit.
2. It's just a point: Knowing when to focus and when to let go is crucial. This balance is essential in navigating the ups and downs of any career.
3. Life is bigger than the court: Professional challenges are just a small part of a bigger picture. Always stay open to new experiences and learning opportunities.
Highly recommend watching the full speech.
Roger Federer reminded us that while talent is important, "most of the time, it’s not about having a gift. It’s about having grit."

Samuel Oluwatoye (thank you!) sent parts of the transcript of this speech and I had to go and find the full video. The 2024 Commencement Address by Roger Federer at Dartmouth was such an inspiring speech. The lessons are profound, and universally relatable. Some of the lessons I took from this are:
1. Only hard work can make work look effortless - Effortless is a myth.
2. Never dwell on past victories or failures. Celebrate or cry if you need to; what's done is done - It's just a point.
3. There is a whole world out there, life does not start and end in that arena (office, school, church, etc) build meaningful relationships and live a life that you are proud of - Life is bigger than a court.
What are your key takeaways?
